Freedom Matters, a freewrite

"Not another crusade!" my friend Carly cried when I told her I was going on the warpath about the lack of a dog park in town.

"Our dogs need a defender. I will be that defender. They need a place to stretch their legs without being accosted by Karens with dogs on leashes, pointing out the law about no dog being off leash. Threatening to call the dog warden right then and there while my dog takes a little swim in the river. Her dog is fat. Mine is slim. Her dog is unhealthy. Mine is a picture of health. We all need protection from those Karens, dogs and humans. Down with Karens!"

I got up on the steps of the village hall, and began to holler into a megaphone.

"We need a dog park! Unfair to local dogs! We need a dog park!"

A Karen came along with her pooch, a three-legged and scruffy thing that was wearing a muzzle and pulling mightily at its leash. It, and she, wanted to kill me.

"I know you! You let your dog off leash on the trails! You are a CRIMINAL. A PUBLIC ENEMY. A DOMESTIC TERRORIST" she cried. She called the police.

This was only the beginning of my latest crusade.

This is my entry to @mariannewest's daily freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is not another crusade. This really is a bit of a crusade for me. I haven't done anything about it though. I've been told it was a crusade of my father's from way back in his day, yet we still have nowhere for dogs to socialize off leash, and to get some good exercise.

Your shorts are like the tasters at the shop. It lures you in, just enough to make you want the whole packet! I always want more from your stories, but in their short format they also lead the reader to make their own ideas! Thank you so much for sharing.

And thank you for that lovely comment!

When I get the opportunity to read your short stories, I always do! They are always so fun to read, thanks so much for sharing them.

Why thank you! I just remembered your modulations. I have to get back to those. So much to read around here!

Yes, right? So many great authors and so little time. Sometimes I just want to grab a glass of wine and read! Thanks so much. I still need to work on the story a bit. But with time (and wine) I will get there.

Happily, no Karens around my neck of the woods, and my four walk freely but do obey voice commands. I used to live in the Netherlands and just everybody wants to mind your business when it comes to dogs and leashes.

Mine comes when called, so I do put her on a leash if a another dog on a leash is coming, or someone on a bike. But I take her to the furthest, least populated places I can find. Dogs that socialize only on leash are nearly always aggressive. It's really not OK that there is no dog park for 40 miles.

Good story, I thought for a moment to write something like this for today, but then I regretted it and preferred to write personal thoughts.

Good job.

Poor dogs. :( I'm with you 100%. If you're not gonna stand up for the small things, it's that much less likely you will for the big ones, you know?

Good point. Most of us don't stand up for anything at all, unless a politician tells them to. It very weird these days.

How can a dog swim on a lease? I would have told her to read between the lines as I held up 3 fingers.

My dog loves to swim. It's so nice to see. And luckily, there are several places I can take her to go for a dip, while I listen to the birds and the bees. It's such a gorgeous time of year here in the northeast.

Try posting No Leash signs at the entrances of trails and see where that leads to. 🤗

The dog scene is so different in Japan. I feel so bad for all of the dogs, at least where I live (in a city). My kids want a dog so bad, but without a yard, and woods for to let a dog run in, I’ll never allow it.

Love it!
And as others already noted: your stories always leave us wanting more.
Especially with a cliff-hanger ending like this:

..."You are a CRIMINAL. A PUBLIC ENEMY. A DOMESTIC TERRORIST" she cried. She called the police.

This was only the beginning of my latest crusade.

Five minutes is not enough to wrap up a story!

I've been called all of those things, and by the president of the US, because I refused to submit to a certain medical procedure. That was all bound to show up in a freewrite someday.

Thanks for loving my little story!

lol now you've got me going on my real crusade
