A Freewrite:
Nobody knows why my dad came up with the idea of going on what he called sightseeing tours every weekend, but when I was a kid we did it for ten or eleven years, right up until he fell off a cliff trying to take a picture of mom, Joe, and me. We must have gone to every roadside attraction in a hundred mile radius. Some of them were really cheesy like the one whose main attraction was the fossilized toe of a Woolly Mammoth. Dad paid for us to see a freaking toe?
But others were pretty cool. Dad was a structural engineer and had contacts all over the tri-state area so occasionally we’d get to go to an industrial site and see something like a big machine that made aluminum cans or hubcaps. He had a friend who worked at a place that made fireworks. That was a place I really wanted to go, maybe Joe and I could get some free samples. But when I asked dad about it he shook his head and said no kids allowed, too dangerous. Places that make cans and hubcaps aren’t dangerous? Maybe when you’re older he said. So the next weekend took us to a soda pop bottling facility instead, that was right next to a scenic overlook, the one where he tried to take our picture.

Good luck with that. Unless of course young black men arrested on Staten Island routinely get to have their trials moved to Manhattan or Brooklyn. Oh yeah, that doesn’t happen.

That must have been traumatic for you. Wow!
How old were you? Did any other father figures or role models come into your life?
It’s fiction, written for a freewrite. My dad died of old age and I don’t have a brother named Joe.
Oh I understand.
