I don’t think there is a piece of furniture, made of cloth, left in the house that hasn’t been scratched by my two cats. A friend told me cats didn’t scratch leather. Don’t believe that because my cats proved that nothing is sacred from their scratchy claws. I bought a red leather chair and I see some scratchy marks on the back of it.
I love my cats and wish they were declawed. Even though they are inside cats, declawing has been outlawed. I agree it is a cruel thing to do to an animal.
Another friend suggested a scratch deterrent spray. I purchased this but it doesn’t stop them for long.
I’ve had cats for years and never had this scratchy problem when they went outside to get the scratching out of there system by scratching a tree or something. It is dangerous here to let them out because of coyotes or the traffic. Although I live in the country and not a lot of traffic, previous cats have been killed by vehicles.
As I type this my two darlings are sleeping peacefully and probably dreaming about new furniture to leave their mark on.

I also have this problem with a cat in the house, it scratches the furniture and rips it apart.
Greetings and a hug, darling.
Hi @zeleiracordero. I’ve covered some furniture with sheets to keep the cats from them. My older cat doesn’t bother as much as the younger one. I have a scratching pad for them that they do use if I sprinkle catnip on it. 🤗
Freewrite with Prompt based on the word "scratchy" ? Now that is what I call being creative, Joanne. Love it
Morning Rob @robertandrew. Thanks for your kind comments.🤗
I think that cats scratch everything to pieces!
Hey @mariannewest. Yes they can be little scratching devils especially when they get bored staying inside the house all the time.
Our vet tells us it's NOT inhumane to declaw and his argument is, "Would you circumcise your son? Same difference." Actually, I was opposed to circumcision but let husband decide that one, and if I had it to do over, I'd hold my ground. The procedure was horrible and at age two our son had it ripped back again without warning by a barbaric pediatrician who left that boy terrified for years of doctors.... but I digress.. . our Bobi the Bad spent his first year here scratching everything, damaging the furniture, refusing to use scratching posts, and we broke down and had him (CONFESSION) declawed, and he is no cripple. He had behavior issues before the declawing, and they remained the same after. If it had been up to me, I'd have just rehomed him and found a new and better cat. But so many major decisions in life are not mine to make, and I am now in shutdown mode, painting cats on wood slices, because it's the most useless thing I can think of to do in lieu of doing something constructive. Maybe tomorrow I'll be in a better frame of mind. Meanwhile, Scratchy is doing what cats do, and we humans are enabling their evil habits because of the irresistible cuteness of wicked little fireballs who steal hour hearts....
