I live in a cold climate, and cannnot imagine doing laundry in the winter in the river! And I have not always lived near a river or a creek. I did hand wash all of my laundry in a sink for a few months while I was a student in Europe, because I didn't understand how the laundromat worked. It certainly wasn't the social event you describe, however.
