This is my post on #freewriters2929#dailyprompt trailing behind hosted by @marinnewest's.
Amara had always felt as though she was trailing behind everyone else. In school, her friends seemed to grasp lessons faster, win awards easily, and walk confidently into every new challenge. She, on the other hand, often needed more time, more practice, and more courage. It wasn’t that she wasn’t intelligent—she just bloomed slowly, like a flower waiting for the right season.
One day, her class went on a long-distance race. The whistle blew, and everyone dashed forward with excitement. Within minutes, Amara found herself at the back, her breath heavy and her legs already tired. “Why am I always last?” she whispered to herself.
As she slowed down, she noticed something the others didn’t: the beauty around her. The soft rustle of leaves, the sun gently touching the path, the tiny butterflies dancing through the air. She breathed deeply, allowing the calmness to fill her.
Then she saw an elderly man sitting by the path, struggling to stand. The faster runners had rushed past him, too focused on reaching the finish line. Amara stopped immediately to help him. She held his hand, steadying him until he was safe. The man smiled warmly and said, “Sometimes those at the back see what the ones in front miss.”
She continued her run, not faster, but lighter. When she finally reached the finish line, the cheers surprised her. Her teachers had seen what she did.
Amara realized in that moment that trailing behind didn’t mean failing. Sometimes it meant seeing deeper, caring more, and discovering strength others never notice.
