1 March 2024, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2298: the rise of nationalism

in Freewriters3 months ago

For many centuries, the City of Brunswick was built on trade and this translated to lots of visitors coming around the trade centre each year. The trade centre was a centre of commerce and with time, it flourished and so opened its gate to different people and different cultures across the globe.
But with this came some other problems. As the centre became more prosperous, the Natives felt that the foreign merchants were taking over, with their exotic wares as against their local wares. As if that was not enough, their tradition of morality was slipping through their fingers as their girls now wore skimpy dresses and their boys saw nothing wrong with gambling in casinos with their hard-earned money.

Anthony a fiery orator with fire burning in his veins, felt that the Natives were now a shadow of their former selves whose identity had been taken away by foreign influence.

The rise of nationalism was insidious. While a few didn't identify with the dangers pronounced by Anthony, many others succumbed, swayed by his speech and antics.

So a day came when the gates of Brunswick were finally closed to foreigners in its quest to preserve its unique identity.

But the City once a bustling commercial centre, became an island unto itself, a people entirely isolated from the outside world.
