** A young Algerian man was found detained for 26 years in his neighbor’s basement **

In a strange incident of its kind, the Algerian authorities announced the arrest of a 61-year-old man, a guard in the municipality, on charges of kidnapping and detaining his neighbor for 26 years.

According to Omar's family, the kidnapped person (who was 19 years old when he disappeared) left his village heading to the city center of Djelfa in 1998, and has not been found since then.
He was searched for and his pictures were published on television to no avail

The investigation began after a Facebook post indicating that a person had been missing since 1998 and that he was being held by a person only 200 meters away from his family’s home in the village of Al-Qudid, Djelfa Province.

After investigations, the authorities found “Omar” (45 years old) 26 years after his disappearance, where he was detained in a stable near the family home in southern Algeria, without the possibility of escape.

"Omar" stated that during his detention, he heard his relatives and saw them through a small opening in the stable, and he also learned of the death of his mother during his absence. He added, "He could not scream or escape because of magic, but his knot was loosened as soon as he moved away from the house of the person who was holding him."

The 61-year-old defendant was arrested and investigated to prepare for his trial. The prosecution indicated that he was living a normal life.
