Tunde was brave about everything, (part of the reason his dad wanted him to join the military) except buttons. Shirt buttons, elevator buttons, even the harmless ones on his mother’s throw pillows made him step back like they were tiny monsters. His trouble began on Monday when his school announced “Uniform Inspection Week.” Everyone had to wear their shirts fully buttoned. No excuses. At home, his sister Safiya tried to help. “Why are you even scared?” she asked, opening her tin box filled with colourful buttons. Tunde didn’t know. All he knew was that when a button rolled even slightly, his heart started beating really ffast and was very anxious. Later that night, his mum revealed the truth. “When you were a baby, you swallowed a button,” she said. “You cried for hours. Since then, you avoid them subconsciously.” The next morning, Tunde stood in front of his shirt, took a deep breath, and slowly started fastening each button. His hands were trembling aggressively , but he kept going, he closed his eyes and kept pushing forward. When he reached the last one, he smiled. He had done it. At school, his teacher looked shocked. “Tunde! Perfect uniform!” , his teacher exclaimed, and for the first time, Tunde realized something important. Courage wasn’t the absence of fear it was moving forward, one tiny button at a time.
