Ohhh … I can attest to the somberness of the Sea of Japan side of the mountains. It strikes me every time I drive from Gunma through the final long tunnel into Niigata.
Without fail, you drive from a beautiful sunny day into the depths of a mountain and come out into rain, snow, or overcast skies. The weather is so different on this side of the mountains.
