I do love the smell of rain in spring and summer. I wanted to describe the smell more specifically in that poem but had a hard time doing so given the limit on words. As a result, I opted for the generic reference in hopes that it would give each reader his/her own impression of the smell of spring rain. Hopefully it worked.
