There is a Japanese swordsmanship mindset when you are going to cut someone down, your intention should always be to continue your stroke even when you are cut down yourself. This ensures your target does not escape because of your demise.
I am not sure if this was Miyamoto Musashi or one of the swordmasters from the book Lives of Master Swordsmen, that chicken read the book!
