The feel of music
lingers on calused fingers.
Lost in a moment.

As I wrote the Haiku I tried to capture the illusive essence that playing an instrument gives you, when the music just takes you away in its flow and you're swept up in the currents of creation.

I play guitar, and I've found it can be a deeply meditative practice once you've got beyond the initial learning stages. When the muscle memory just takes over and you're lost in an eternal moment of ever changing rhythm the world falls away.

It is a paradox - change encapsulated in a timeless state, but I have no better way to put it. This feeling often overtakes me when playing on my own but when jamming with other musicians it is different, more a communication without words, an instinctive reacting through the instruments voice.

These are some of the insights that arose while writing this haiku in response to this image.

The basic definition of Haiku is-- an objective, Japanese short poem based on a nature theme. Haiku should have three lines consisting of the following number of syllables per line-- five, then seven, then five.

True haiku should contain one or two images that have a simplicity and clarity that actually become transcendent. The analogy has been posited of Haiku as the artistic equivalent of the practice of Zen Buddhism. By reflecting a simple moment of perfection, one finds the universal moment.

The haiku in this post attempts to capture what Japanese Haiku masters call Karumi (軽み):

beauty in simplicity; poetic beauty reflected in its simplicity, free from preconceptions and moral judgment.

And Shiori (しおり):

gentleness; the levity and the delicate charm that radiates from the verses, where things are evoked in the reader without aggressiveness or excessive explicitness.

You can't touch the music, but the music can touch you, another great piece of writing from you keep it up =)

You can't touch the music, but the music can touch you.

Very well put! Music is a wonderful thing, whether playing or just listening, it whisks away to other worlds 🌱

Thanks for the encouragement Jose 👍🙂

This is a magnificent jewel of a poem ... and I love a haiku!

Thank you deeanndmathews 🙏

Many people don't get haiku, and how hard they are to do well. Very easy to do badly of course as they're so short, but the brevity of the poem means each word choice and getting an image across become even more important and tight.

I've never written a haiku in my life that didn't go through 5 or more edits lol

And that is why it looks and feels like a polished gem when you get it right... because it is...

Good work, I am looking forward to your next one.

Thanks m8.

There are a whole month of them coming up, and the next 3-4, if my memory serves me, are longer pieces that were written inspired by pieces of art at the Lady Lever art gallery which is near to my home town.

Thanks as always for checking out my writing @rcaine

It is such a wonderful feeling, when you are in love with what you do, the rest of world fades away.

That's exactly it @gratitudemine

You got the essence of the haiku perfectly. It's that feeling, and it is a magical feeling.

Thank you for visiting and reading my post 🙂

I adore Haiku, and that one of yours did a dang fine job of capturing the essence of music making.

K, I am going to go get lost in some compost now, lol! Hope you are having a lovely day!

Thanks @generikat

Yeah, I'm glad it reminded you of that magical timelessness that happens when you're pulled away playing an instrument.

Good luck with the compost. I must get to the allotment soon and deal with that type of stuff soon 🙂
