There's A Tree Down [Or, The Despair I'm Feeling]

Around here, we cry 'there's a tree down!'
Like it's a war, and we're expecting help
The wind rushes from the south, the gardens blown
Over from neat suburbia to a noman's land, a chaos
Of fallen gums, broken fences & trapped cars.

We lost two - one weakened by wiggling borers
The other by wet ground, unable to hold on
Chainsaws sound all day as politicians similarly fall
One drunkenly drives into a fence - his own storm
Ending in resignation. Corruption is rife
The foundations are weak - like trees, they topple.

We're all in a state of emergency - crying
Help, whilst everything is falling.

Ah, 2021's been a year, hasn't it? Last week we experienced the windiness storm we've weathered since we've been in this house, where we were hammered by 100km an hour gusts. Thank goodness the plum trees sheltered the polytunnel somewhat, and the forest next door broke up the worst of it. We only lost two trees - one to an insect called a borer that weakens the tree, and the other because the ground was so wet that it just toppled over. In other suburbs, people fared worse - social media was full of calls for help to clean up and the SES was working hard to clean up roads, as well as the power companies being busy with power outages.

And In Other News...

The toppling trees made me think today about various corrupt politicians being called out over the last few months, or their double standards of behaviour. Liberal opposition leader Tim Smith stepped down for driving his car into a fence whilst over the limit, the NSW state premier stepped down over corruption charges, and on it goes. We seem to turn a blind eye to what goes on before our very eyes (something Orwell criticised, although we still haven't learnt from history - the pigs are still in the beds with the better sheets, the whiskey and the mash whilst the rest of us suffer) - and it keeps happening. We have short memories and a reluctance to engage with toppling down a structure that is only serving those at the very top.

What to do? Tidy up the garden, and wait for the next storm. Because of course the powers that be aren't responsible for climate change either, are they? Don't worry - buy keep cups and recycle. Perhaps that will offset private jets, second homes, rockets and satellites, which of course are written off as guilty pleasures or contributions to mankind.

No one is saving us from anything. We're in it together, or not at all. Given what the 1 percent are doing - or not doing - most days I think we're pretty fucked.

With Love,

Chin up! The world is in a right state, but despair won't change that 🙂

Don't let the bastards grind you down

Despair is also a legit feeling - can't walk around with a permanent positive face or I'll go bananas lol! One needs to vent...

You're right

Yup! What we learn from history is that we DON'T learn from history. What an apt expression! And how many trees are falling?! And how many foundations are weak (corrupt)? Tragic.....Where will it end.....

Yes friend, things look pretty grim, and especially for Australia right now. They seem to be testing how far they can push you guys before releasing the full blown tyranny on the rest of us.
It’s always going to be by a very small margin that light prevails, but it will prevail. The question we’re all asking is, how much worse will it get first and what will remain of our previous lives. Many of our countrymen are only just realizing what we saw long ago. The truth is a constant push forward. We may yet be surprised. 🦋

I hope we ARE suprised, as I'm feeling uber cynical at the moment. I keep thinking of the seed cracking open in the darkness. Pain can bring some amazing things. Better we crack open than remain as is, for sure. Thanks so much for the light you bring with your comment. xx

"Drunk on his own hubris". Love it and immediately need to read Ozymandius to myself, slowly and aloud, over coffee.

We've also had several trees down and I almost opted out of a Garden update for that reason but hey, maybe not.

Definitely think the destruction and chaos of gardens is part of the whole shebang!

It is always sad to see a tree down... a politician I'm more ambivalent about to be honest. If they all accidently crashed their assorted vehicles at the same time I wonder if the world wouldn't be a better place. But I shouldn't wish ill to people like that. I understand the phunk behind this poem though riverflows, I often wonder if/how anything will change without the 99% getting up and actually stopping the 1% from doing what they do.

Still... it seems like revolution is a dirty word these days. I always thought it had a clean ring to it 😂

I would offer some generic 'chin up' 'it could be worse' words... but I'm not sure that would help. Maybe this will offer some condolences... we have this sorry sack of sht over here fcking everything up for shts and giggles. Not worse than your lot, but not a whole lot better 🤣... 'ya gotta laugh or you'd cry.'

Loved the poem BTW xx

Oh yes your PM's antics amused us no end when we were over there - here, we are focussed on our shitfuckery of a PM. Thanks so much for your comment. A shitty week - suprised I could string words together at all.

When the neighbors to the north took down most of the woods, the rest of the trees lost their health and within a couple years were falling on our property. There are still some coming down... Sometimes they just fall, no wind involved.

We're all in a state of emergency - crying
Help, whilst everything is falling.

This sentence has too much depth to it. The meaning is too relatable.

We're all in a state of emergency - crying
Help, whilst everything is falling.

The best phrase I have read so far, and in life everything falls under its own weight, and the others will fall little by little, nice poem and excellent reflection.

There are a great many more of us than there are of them. When we recognize our unlimited power, we will prevail, and those pigs will be hog tied, drawn up, and quartered by the very same tools they have long hog tied, drawn up, and quartered us.

Our gardens will be tidy, ready to remake mankind, once again. Hopefully this time, nothing will stand between Nature and Nature's way.
