it's not just food for us we must get our fingers dirty
elepant garlic & golden beet & sweet swede
purple brassicas, crimson greens
fat bean pods in furry shells popped into roiling water
it's also for the blue banded bees
& the little blue wrens
Honeyeaters & the tiniest spotted pardelote
Kookas & kestrels that drop into the sea of wild grass for mice
Wattlebirds & whistlers
the bloody possum that rustles in the leaves outside the window at night
Keeping me awake with such thoughts
Gang gangs & other big screeching birds that trim the branches & drop gum nuts all over the fresh raked path
Even the rabbits (I grudgingly suppose) & the earwigs that snip the seedlings clean through
Or the crows that steal the chook eggs
& the bunyips the children chase around the garden.
Each backyard a stubborn little raft
*I was thinking about the concept I've read lately online about how we ARE the ark - each garden, each backyard, each community can be a haven for wildlife even against extinction. With the development going on around here, habitats are cut down and kangaroos are pushed off grazing land, and big trees for nesting birds felled. So the more I plant, the more I feel I am doing something important. I just wish every garden around here did the same. How beautiful it could be.
With Love,

What an awesome concept @riverflows, we can make a difference. I truly hope more people realize and implement this!
It's so sad when one sees trees being felled and vegetation cleared to make way for housing developments. Some areas are protected so they cannot clear everything, but it's not enough to stop the stripping of the natural habitat of the birds and the bees and all the beautiful creatures one finds in nature.
Your poem is lovely!
I can't take credit for the concept but only the way I articulate it and embrace it. It put into words what I'd been feeling. We all are responsible, plus it gives us a positive action instead of crying and giving up. Thanks sooo much for your lovely comment x
Our local council nursery gave me 30 tube stock plants to try and turn my yard into more like a native ark! They even came around and gave me a written report what should come out as well for free. We have started but I got side tracked working on some roofing repairs.
Oh wow that's amazing. I was reading of a similar initiative round Geelong. So many houses put in turf and a few rocks and call that a garden. All those new developments and nothing to attract wildlife, create shade and cool the place down. Breaks my heart.
You have a beautiful concept you got there. I like how you portray that all of us are the ark. And I am thankful to your work!💖
WOW your poem is beautiful!I love the "We Are The Ark" concept. And the message about the importance of preserving wildlife habitats is incredibly powerful.
It's a really hopeful and positive concept I think.
I love that last line! And all the rest of course, but that last line puts a beautiful frame around the picture.
Thanks. I was trying to thread in the sea a little but didn't spend too much time on it. I was pleased with that last line too x
