The choice for colors

When I started photography - as a youngster of about 20 years old - color used to be a conscious (and financial...) choice. Digital photography did not exist and black and white was the default option for many artists.

At some point in time in the 1990's I was one of the early adopter of digital photography. Now it was possible to just shoot and shoot pictures without worrying about film and film development and printing costs!

That was also the moment that I got more and more interested in color. How does it work and why do we see colors and contrasts? How do colors effect our mood and emotions? How were colors used in the past and what do they symbolize?

Apart from the use of colors, I'm also interested in the physical aspects and the systematics to describe them. In what way do RGB, CMYK and HSL work and why are they different? What dit Munsell and Itten have to say in their theories about color?

And last but not least I started looking at other artists' use of color. From Rembrandt to Van Gogh, Karel Appel to Picasso.

I found out that there is no end to this journey. I keep discovering new perspectives and insights! I hope we can share them here!

To kick off one of my first series about the colors of city lights. This series was made some 20 years ago with my first digital camera. The pictures were shot in The Hague (Holland) just using available light. No Photoshop involved!!
