“The Power of Incentives: Fueling Learning One Dollar at a Time”

I always think of a reinforcement where I can be an effective teacher to my students. Every year I experienced different batches of learners. And every year I made different strategies just to catch student's attention and to be active in my classes.

Strategy:

This school year, I wanted them to be engaged more in my classes especially in my math subject. That's why I came up with an idea about a reward system that I sometimes called an Incentive. This is my mechanics: Firstly, every student will given an index card. Secondly, every time they've answered correctly in both board work and recitation-will gain a certain point. The point will depend on how they answered. And thirdly, I used dollar as point system such as $1, $2, $3, $4, $5 and $10. This will be accumulated in a week. The more dollars they've received, the more snacks they can buy from me.

Harvest Time:
Our harvest time is on every Friday of the week. Students not only received snacks but also the accumulated dollars they gained - turned into their performance for the week and that is recorded.

Observations:

I observed there were improvement when it comes to participation. Students were motivated to do their best for two goals (performance and incentive for the week). Students developed confidence in talking and expressing their ideas in front of the class.

As you can see in the pictures students were very happy receiving those simple snacks. As a teacher, I am also happy and willing to spend a little amount just to win the heart of every student in my station. I want to share a quotation I found it while browsing in the internet says: "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime". This quotation reflects of what I did to my students. I want to teach them the reality of life. No one becomes successful without sacrifices and willingness to learn something.

That's all for today my dear Hivers. I hope you've learned something.

Again this is @noddie21... See you all to my next blog.

Sort:

If you are the teacher of my daughter's they would be more excited to do more in your class. They are in grade 7 and grade 8 and both of them are achievers. That was a good way of catching attentions of your students to give them rewards.

Thank you @ronimarie82. Yes, as a teacher, I need to think some ways just to win their hearts and of course to have a very nice interactions in my class.

Your reward system is so creative way to motivate students while making learning fun and engaging. I love how you combines performance and life lessons; it shows your passion for teaching. I remember one of my teachers in high school did something similar and it really left a mark on us students. Keep inspiring and do your best.

thanks @dreamrona. In that way I can give them what is due to them. And I am happy doing that in all my classes.

Woah, I think this is a good strategy mam @noddie21! I think if I'm your student I will also participate and try to gain a lot of points. I think we're competitive by nature so we really want to do our best in this kind of incentivized participation. Nice work!!

thanks ma'am @wittyzell. Yes, gaining a lot of points means they performed well. And I want them to compete specially our district will conduct a math camp to be participated in 8 secondary schools. There are a lot of competitions like friendly match, quiz bee and others. I want them to win.
