Big talk happening about Jared Isaacman possibly back on the NASA track. He would be amazing in this role, but it may not be the best idea.
It's dilemma and a conundrum. Why?
To understand why, let's consider the future. A future where NASA will only be a small part of the total space expansion from Earth.
We already see NASA's role diminishing with the next phase of LEO-based space stations. NASA's plan is to 'rent space' on an as-needed basis, not to have their own space station.
SpaceX will colonize Mars, NASA will be an important, yet small, part in that.
These are examples of the changing role of NASA in space. Important but small compared to private development.
Which brings us back to Jared Isaacman. Are his skills better used on the diminishing role of NASA, or the expanding role of private space enterprises?
Given his already massive influence in private space exploration, it seems that this is the more important place for him.
Emotion says: think now and think NASA. Logic seems to say: think long term, think private.
What is the best option?
Interesting point. He is an amazing man.
Maybe, like Musk, he is best outside government.
He would definitely have more freedom to extend his options in the private sector, and much quicker than government every moves.
