Why lubuntu?

Lubuntu is lightweight version of Ubuntu that's suitable for low-specs and older laptop. You can not expect much but you can do basic and minimum task such as writing and browsing. Lubuntu makes a low-end laptop becomes faster compared to when it is installed with Windows 10.

Why rufus?

For a quick installation with pre-installed windows, rufus is reliable and quick enough to make bootable USB.

Well now, let's start the installation.

First Steps

  • First download lubuntu via their homapage. Link below : https://lubuntu.net
  • Pick 18.04 Bionic Beaver or the Latest 18.10 Cuttlefish.
  • Then, Download Rufus via https://rufus.ie/
  • If both are finished, install Rufus
  • Connect the USB
  • Open Rufus and click on** Device : your usb** and Boot : the ISO of Lubuntu which you have downloaded.
  • Click Start
  • Wait until the process finished

Second Steps

  • Now, reboot the laptop and for Lenovo ideapad click fn+12 to get into reboot menu when the logo appears
  • Now click on Ubuntu installation
  • You have the option to try or to install

Some notes :

  • If you wish to do installation click on erase disk and install the system.
  • If you click on erase disk, you will still have the windows file in your device

Third Steps

  • if you have managed to install everything now it's time to dowload necessary applications and troubleshoot the laptop.

Possible problem for Lenovo 130S

  • can't connect to wifi/network.
Solution : open terminal alt+ctrl+ t and type

lsmod | grep iwl

That is to check if the module is loaded.
If yes and the problem is still disabled wifi
type

$ nmcli radio wifi on

  • If it is on but can't connect check

nmcli device wifi connect [network] [password]

  • Then, update and upgrade the system by

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

  • This will take a while and you can do something else while the system is upgrading.

  • if it's done, you can download some other tools and apps like Redshift (blue light filter) and also Libre Office.

Alright, that's how to install Lubuntu. I would say there's no the best distro but pick one that suits your need or preference.

Nice straightforward step by step instructions.

I wonder how Covid has affected Ubuntu. It's just about time for a new LTS OS, and I haven't heard a thing. Course I haven't gone to their website either.

yes, the new one was released 3 months ago and it's called Disco Dingo. I suppose I choose Bionic Beaver because it's been around and well-maintained.

I'm still on Bionic Beaver. I'll wait until October or November to make any change (I've had a couple of problems in the past) and will start with my laptop.
