Will VW significantly reduce battery prices in EVs?

in STEMGeekslast year (edited)

Volkswagen announced that it has developed a new battery production technology that can contribute to a significant reduction in production costs and thus reduce the price of batteries. The new solvent-free dry coating technology dramatically changes both costs and production time, as the most energy-intensive stage of production is eliminated. We are talking about savings of hundreds of millions of euros per year. Until now, battery electrodes have been coated with solvent-dissolved substances and subjected to a long and energy-intensive drying process. The new technology is dry coating somewhat reminiscent of printing. The applied layer is much thinner and more evenly applied, which results in a longer battery life cycle and an increase in charging speed. The new method can save up to 30% of energy and 15% of the space needed for production. Such savings could make Volkswagen the leader in the battery market. The production process is currently being tested and optimized, and production should start in 2026 or 2027 at Volkswagen plants in the USA and Europe.
