As you may know, I was a machinist long before I started 3D printing. My best work went into some model steam engines, which you will see at the end of this post. However, I was stuck running them on compressed air, until I decided to make my own boiler. What you are looking at is a virtual model of the boiler. Not every component is here, but you get the idea.

The door to the smokebox opens up, so you can see through the flue tubes. There should be more than five tubes, but 19-year-old me wasn't an expert in boiler design (I just realised this thing is ten years old).

...from a superheater. The superheater takes low-pressure "wet" steam, which has lots of tiny water droplets, from the steam dome, and runs it through the firebox, heating it further and creating high-pressure "dry" steam, properly called "superheated steam," which is 100% gas, with no liquid water droplets. Dry steam, unlike wet steam, is invisible.

Here is the superheater sub-assembly. I made the main tubes out of brass, and the heater loops are made of copper.

I've showed off plenty of models with decals before. The mock-up of the gauge (the real gauge is a component that I purchased) has a decal made from a photo of the actual gauge, which you will see later in this post.

This is as far as I got building the actual boiler. It's fully functional, and can even power a small steam engine.

A view inside the smokebox. As you may have noticed, there is no hole for the chimney. Maybe I'll finish this boiler eventually, but I think I may simply start over.

A very simple rotary valve engine. It still runs quite smoothly, it's just covered in rust.

A "Tiny Power" 1V-10 vertical slide-valve engine, which I made from a kit (I ordered a box full of castings and machined them). I took the valve cover off, so that you could see the valve block.

Whether I finish this boiler or build a new one, I hope to resume metalworking projects that are more at this level. Any suggestions, other than tanks (since I already have one in mind)?

I looked into model steam engines a while back, but decided I had too many unfinished hobbies already, so I didn't dive in. Maybe one day...
Some of my favorite things are railroad museums and antique engine meetups. I'm also interested in more passive systems like Sterling engines, although I have yet to build one of those, too. It seems like a good way to create a low-powered air circulation fan or something with a similarly low starting torque.
