How To Add and Subtract Decimals easily

in STEMGeeks4 months ago

Firstly, let understand what whole and decimal numbers are;

Whole numbers are numbers that stands without a decimal point.. e.g, 0,1,2,3,19,200,450, etc.

Also, they are numbers that stands before the decimal point..e.g, 2.56, 32.802, 0.3155, etc.

2.56, the whole number is 2
32.802, the whole number is 32
0.3155, the whole number is 0

Decimal numbers are numbers after the decimal point(.) e.g, 2.56, 32.802, 0.3155 etc

2.56, the decimal number is 56
32.802, the decimal number is 802
0.3155, the decimal number is 3155

Now, let's now understand how decimal places are been calculated..

E.g1.. 2.56 has 2 decimal places because after the decimal point, there are two numbers which are ; 5 and 6

E.g2... 32.802 has 3 decimal places because after the decimal point, there are three numbers which are; 8, 0 and 2.

E.g3... 0.3155 has 4 decimal places because after the decimal point, there are four numbers which are; 3,1,5 and 5

E.g4.. 0.00010 has 5 decimal places because after the decimal point, there are five numbers which are 0,0,0,1and 0

Note the following ;

i. After the decimal point, you read the number one after the other.

E.g, 2.805
This number is read as "TWO POINT EIGHT ZERO FIVE" NOT
TWO POINT EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIVE

E.g, 512.2187
This number is read as "FIVE HUNDRED AND TWELVE POINT TWO ONE EIGHT SEVEN" NOT
FIVE HUNDRED AND TWELVE POINT TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SEVEN

ii. identify the biggest number, then you arrange it neatly followed by the smallest number..

E.g. 10.213 + 12.402
Since 10 and 12 are the whole numbers, pick the biggest amongst them. Now, the biggest is 12, so you write it out first followed by other.

             1  2 .  4  0 2
         +   1  0 .  2  1 3

iii. Always make sure that your decimal point stands vertically at the same place

E.g. 12.402 + 5.014

       1  2 .  4  0  2
   +      5 .  0  1  4

              1  2 .  4  0  2
            + 5  . 0  1  4

Now, the above examples

The first one is ✅ because the decimal is well arranged vertically.

Note; all the rules applies for both ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION...

In my next post, I will be handling different cases of ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF DECIMAL NUMBERS.
