As I said in my first post, I am from Pisa, so it seems logic that I start posting about my hometown and surrounding areas.

I will start with a topic that is almost unknown outside of town but strongly felt inside. I'm talking about celebration and festivals that go back to Middle Ages and pervade public life all year long.

In this post I will talk about Pisa New Year: during Middle Ages every town had it'is own calendar, and Pisa's calendar started on March 25th, Incarnation of Christ Day, 9 months before Christmas.

The Day is still celebrated as a municipal holiday. The pictures I will post are from past year, March 25th 2021, as this year I was not able to attend.

Celebrations starts with a ceremony on the Ponte di Mezzo, the central bridge on the Arno River, when a Pisan Flag is raised.

Then a Solemn Mass in Pisa Cathedral is held.

The New Year officially starts at Midday, whe a ray of light hits an egg shaped stone inside the cathedral.

The day finished with the mayor of Pisa and other local authorities doing a night tour of some renovated areas of Pisa old town.

Past mayor were quite careless about public spaces, especially in the old part of town, but the new adminstration has done a great job, cleaning and renovating most of it.

Tht's all for now I hope you'll enjoy.

I will do my best to show Pisa and surrounding areas, especially places that are less popular and little known to general public.
