It was a summer day and the sun warmed the winding paths that led us to the Castle. It was early afternoon when I arrived in the village and climbing up to the castle was a challenge. It was worth every step as the view was breathtaking (as was the climb) and the atmosphere was unique.

A minha visita ao Castelo de Monsanto.
O dia era de Verão e o sol aquecia os caminhos sinuosos que nos conduziam ao Castelo. Era início da tarde quando cheguei à aldeia e subir até ao castelo foi um desafio. Valeu cada passo pois a vista era de tirar o folego (assim como a subida) e a atmosfera única.
Upon reaching the top of the hill where the castle is located, the heat became more evident. Fortunately, I discovered a shady spot provided by an imposing rock that seemed to be part of the castle itself. The rock was cool to the touch, contrasting with the heat. As I was sheltered, I decided to launch my drone, curious to capture the entire landscape.

Ao chegar ao topo da colina onde esta o castelo, o calor tornou-se mais evidente. Felizmente, descobri um recanto de sombra proporcionado por um rochedo imponente que parecia fazer parte do próprio castelo. A rocha era fria ao toque, contrastando com o calor. Como estava resguardado decidi lançar o meu drone, curioso para captar toda aquela paisagem.
The preparation of the equipment attracted the attention of some visitors, curiously the older ones. The silence was broken by the whirring of the propellers as the drone slowly rose, climbing to a height that allowed me to glimpse the entire village of Monsanto, the castle walls and the ruins of the neighboring buildings.

A preparação do equipamento atraiu a atenção de alguns visitantes, curiosamente dos mais velhos. O silêncio foi quebrado pelo zumbido das hélices à medida que o drone se elevava lentamente, subindo até uma altura que me permitiu vislumbrar toda a aldeia de Monsanto, as muralhas do castelo e as ruínas das construções vizinhas.
From above, the castle was revealed in all its grandeur, with walls that seemed to grow from the rocks of the mountain. The ruins of the chapel of St. John and the chapel of St. Michael, outside the walls, seemed like silent markers of a history that stretches beyond our comprehension. The Necropolis of São Miguel, with its tombs carved into the rock, is a reminder of the ancestral connection between man and this place.

Do alto, o castelo revelava-se em toda a sua grandiosidade, com muralhas que pareciam crescer das pedras da montanha. As ruínas da capela de São João e da capela de São Miguel, do lado de fora das muralhas, pareciam marcadores silenciosos de uma história que se estende para além da nossa compreensão. A Necrópole de São Miguel, com as suas sepulturas escavadas na rocha, é um lembrete da ligação ancestral entre o homem e este lugar.
As I explored my surroundings, I couldn't help but feel a little like a time traveler. The images captured the contrast between the austerity of the gray stones and the serenity of the surrounding landscape with rolling hills, low vegetation and a sky so blue it could easily be mistaken for the sea.

Enquanto explorava os arredores, não pude deixar de me sentir um bocadinho como um viajante no tempo. As imagens captaram o contraste entre a austeridade das pedras cinzentas e a serenidade da paisagem à volta com as colinas onduladas, uma vegetação rasteira e, um céu tão azul que podia ser confundido facilmente com o mar.
When I finally landed the drone, some tourists asked to see the footage. I proudly showed them places that would be impossible to reach on foot. Sharing this experience brought us all together in our admiration for that unique setting.

Quando finalmente fiz o drone pousar, alguns turistas pediram para ver as imagens. Mostrei-lhes, com orgulho, locais que seriam impossíveis de alcançar a pé. Partilhar essa experiência fez com que todos ficássemos unidos pela admiração por aquele cenário único.
Before leaving the castle, I went to the ruins of the chapels and the necropolis. It wasn't easy to walk the paths, but there was something almost sacred in those slow steps. Next to the ruins of the chapel of São Miguel, the contours of the graves and the simplicity of the shapes gave a human dimension to the place. I imagined the monks and faithful who would have walked there centuries before in search of peace.

Antes de deixar o castelo, fui até às ruínas das capelas e da necrópole. Não estava a ser fácil percorrer os caminhos, mas havia algo de quase sagrado naqueles passos lentos. Junto às ruínas da capela de São Miguel, os contornos das sepulturas e a simplicidade das formas davam uma dimensão humana ao local. Imaginei os monges e fiéis que ali teriam caminhado séculos antes em busca de paz.
At the end of the visit, with the sun already starting to set, I returned to the village to the shelter we managed to find. Monsanto is a piece of Portugal's history and natural beauty that I will never forget.

Ao final da visita, com o sol já a começar a descer, voltei à aldeia ao refúgio que conseguimos arranjar. Monsanto, é um pedaço da história e da beleza natural de Portugal que jamais esquecerei.

Taking shelter on the top of the mountain, the landscape moment from the top of the mountain is very beautiful.
