Siendo de un país tropical como Venezuela, no es tan sencillo ver la nieve, para verla hay que visitar el unico estado que se encuentra a una altura suficiente como para que caiga una nevada y aún así, no es tan común observarla.
Y por eso viajeros hoy les voy a contar sobre el día que tuve la suerte de por fin sentir y ver esos copos de hielo blanco.

Being from a tropical country like Venezuela, it is not so easy to see snow, to see it you have to visit the only state that is at a high enough altitude for snowfall and even then, it is not so common to see it.
And so travelers today I am going to tell you about the day I had the luck to finally feel and see those white ice flakes.
Una mañana nevada / A snowy morning
Diez horas pasaron desde que salimos del terminal de pasajeros de Barquisimeto con rumbo a Mérida, un estado perteneciente a los Andes venezolanos. En esta ocasión viajamos solo mi hermano y yo, pero no era la primera vez que íbamos a ese lugar, desde pequeños mi mamá nos llevó en varias oportunidades a conocer la encantadora ciudad merideña.
Algo que siempre me ha impresionado de esta ciudad es la cercanía de las montañas, es lo primero que puedes ver cuando sales del terminal.
Y ese día justamente amanecieron nevadas.

Ten hours passed since we left the passenger terminal in Barquisimeto on our way to Merida, a state in the Venezuelan Andes. This time my brother and I traveled alone, but it was not the first time we went to that place, since we were little my mom took us several times to visit the charming city of Merida.
Something that has always impressed me about this city is the proximity of the mountains, it is the first thing you can see when you leave the terminal.
And that day just that day dawned snowy.
Solo estaríamos tres días en la ciudad por lo que hicimos una programación de lo que haríamos estando alli, pero al ver los picos nevados decidimos ir ese mismo día al teleférico para tratar de ver la nieve cerquita, cosa que ninguno de los dos había hecho antes.
We would only be in the city for three days so we made a schedule of what we would do while we were there, but when we saw the snowy peaks we decided to go that same day to the cable car to try to see the snow up close, something that neither of us had done before.
Alrededor de las once de la mañana estábamos formados en la fila para ingresar al Sistema Teleférico de Mérida Mukumbarí. «Siendo uno de los telefericos más altos del mundo alcanzando una altura de 4.765 m s. n. m., y el segundo más largo, con 12,5 kilómetros de trayecto» tiene mas de 60 años de historia desde su creación.
Around eleven o'clock in the morning we were lined up to enter the Mukumbarí Cable Car System of Mérida. "Being one of the highest cable cars in the world reaching a height of 4,765 meters above sea level, and the second longest, with 12.5 kilometers of route" has more than 60 years of history since its creation.
Para poder ingresar debes cancelar una entrada general que tiene un costo de 20 USD y 40 USD si eres extranjero o deseas viajar en V.I.P, diferencia que me parece abismal, pero bueno, fue el pago por ver la nieve. Entiendo que no es una infraestructura fácil de mantener, que son muchos los empleados que allí laboran aún asi, la diferencia entre un ticket nacional y un extranjero es exagerada.
Ahora si, comenzamos a subir. El teleférico cuenta con cinco estaciones que te llevan desde los «1.640 m.s.n.m. (altura a la que se encuentra la ciudad de Mérida) hasta los 4.765 m s. n. m.»
To enter you must pay a general entrance fee of 20 USD and 40 USD if you are a foreigner or want to travel in V.I.P., a difference that seems abysmal to me, but well, it was the payment to see the snow. I understand that it is not an easy infrastructure to maintain, that there are many employees who work there even so, the difference between a national ticket and a foreigner is exaggerated.

Aqui si comenzamos a subir y subir hasta la cuarta estación llamada Loma Redonda que esta a unos 4.000 m.s.n.m., era necesario pausar el camino a la última estación porque el cuerpo debe adaptarse a la altura.
Es muy común que a las personas les dé lo que se conoce aqui como “mal de páramo” que se trata de vómito, dolor de cabeza y otros síntomas que son producidos por el efecto que tiene la altura en tu cuerpo, afortunadamente ni mi hermano, ni yo llegamos a sufrir de eso en este viaje. De todas formas el teleférico cuenta con el servicio de salud en cada una de las estaciones.
Es muy común que a las personas les dé lo que se conoce aqui como “mal de páramo” que se trata de vómito, dolor de cabeza y otros síntomas que son producidos por el efecto que tiene la altura en tu cuerpo, afortunadamente ni mi hermano, ni yo llegamos a sufrir de eso en este viaje. Here we started to climb and climb up to the fourth station called Loma Redonda which is at 4.000 m.a.s.l., it was necessary to pause on the way to the last station because the body must adapt to the altitude.

En Loma redonda nos recibieron con una agradable serenata de música tradicional andina, allí también ofrecen paseos a caballo para visitar un pueblito llamado Los Nevados. Aqui si fue el momento de comenzar a tomar chocolate caliente.
In Loma Redonda we were welcomed with a nice serenade of traditional Andean music, there they also offer horseback riding to visit a small town called Los Nevados. Here it was time to start drinking hot chocolate.
El frío era bastante tolerable y hasta este punto aún dudaba poder ver la nieve, porque entiendo que no cae suficiente en esa zona y la que cae a veces no dura mucho tiempo.
The cold was quite tolerable and up to this point I still doubted I would be able to see snow, because I understand that not enough falls in that area and the snow that does fall sometimes doesn't last very long.
Subiendo a Pico Espejo / Climbing Pico Espejo
A medida que íbamos subiendo en la cabina del teleférico comenzó a lloviznar, algo que me lleno de mucha felicidad y esperanza porque alguna vez, en una anterior visita a este estado me comentaron que hay mayor probabilidad de ver nieve cuando llueve.
¡Y asi fue!
As we were going up in the cable car cabin it began to drizzle, something that filled me with happiness and hope because once, on a previous visit to this state, I was told that there is a greater probability of seeing snow when it rains.
And so it was!
Estábamos llegando cuando pequeños copos de nieve comenzaron a caer. Fue la bienvenida más hermosa, por fin, después de tanto ir a Mérida en busca de la nieve tuvimos nuestro día de suerte.
We were just arriving when small snowflakes began to fall. It was the most beautiful welcome, finally, after so much going to Merida in search of snow we had our lucky day.
En la estación Pico Espejo se encuentra un monumento a la Virgen de las nieves, patrona del estado Mérida, aqui la altura era de aproximadamente 4.700 m.s.n.m., y también mucha gente estaba emocionada al igual que nosotros por estar presenciando ese momento tan especial en un país tropical.
No era una nevada que cubría absolutamente todo de blanco, pero fue la que a mí me tocó vivir. A los pocos minutos estaba toda empapada y temblando de frío y aún así no quería irme de allí.
Algo de lo que me di cuenta días después de haber visitado el teleférico es que no tome fotos suficientes de la nieve 😓

At the Pico Espejo station there is a monument to the Virgin of the Snows, patron saint of the state of Merida, here the altitude was approximately 4,700 m.a.s.l., and also many people were excited as we were to be witnessing this special moment in a tropical country.

One thing I realized days after visiting the cable car is that I didn't take enough pictures of the snow 😓.
Después de un rato en el que ya no sentía mis manos decidimos bajar a las otras estaciones, asi nos dió tiempo de conocerlas y recorrer un poco sus espacios.
After a while, when I could no longer feel my hands, we decided to go down to the other stations, so we had time to get to know them and walk around a bit.
Y bueno viajeros hasta aqui llegó la historia de hoy, espero que les haya entretenido y les pueda servir de guía por si en algún momento deciden visitar el Teleférico de Mérida. Yo la pasé increíble ese día y por eso se los recomiendo.

I can relate with you. I am also from a tropical state and to see snowfall we have to visit northern areas of our country.
I really enjoy being from a tropical country, but from time to time the cold weather is needed 😅

vaya cuanto paraiso tiene Venezuela para visitar, la nieve es re kawai aca en Ecuador solo en los nevados la podemos disfrutar, es un frio agradable con esas lindas fotos , muy bonito lugar ^^
