Croatia - Having fun in Pag and visiting the beautiful city of Split

Have you ever been to the island of Pag? It is an island that is located in Croatia, just above the city of Zadar with which it is connected by a bridge. Among young people is very famous, especially for the presence of the beach of Zrce, defined as the Ibiza of the Balkans. In this post, I would like to tell you about a vacation I spent on this island. I left with three other friends with the car from the port of Ancona, from there we took the ferry and after a whole night of travel, we finally arrived in the city of Zadar.

Here early in the morning, around 7 am, we slowly got off the ferry and a very strange thing happened. While we were in the car, waiting in line to get out of customs, we were talking amongst ourselves and saying who knows what nonsense and all four of us started laughing. Just then, one of the policemen who was following the controls, saw us laughing and immediately ordered us to roll down our windows. As soon as we lowered them, she asked us, in English, why we were laughing and without even waiting for our answer she asked us to follow her with the car. She took us out of the line and led us to some of her other colleagues, here they made us get out of the car and took me and a friend of mine into a small cabin, while they were searching our car with the drug dogs. I have to admit that I have a very easy laugh and especially if I start laughing I have a hard time stopping, at that moment even if the situation was a bit tense, I was sure that I had not done anything wrong so I was quite relaxed. I was in this room with my friend and two policemen who seemed really angry, and since we didn't want to make the situation worse, both my friend and I avoided making eye contact since we were sure that we would have burst out laughing immediately if we hadn't. After about ten minutes, in which we managed with great difficulty not to laugh, the policemen finally let us out and when we returned to the car they told us that we were free to leave. In particular, the policewoman who had asked us at the beginning to follow her, explained to us that had seen us laughing so early in the morning, she had thought we were on drugs 😅. Apparently in Croatia people don't laugh too much, because when cops see someone laughing they think they are doing something shady...

After this unexpected interlude, we were finally able to leave and we headed towards the island of Pag. From Zadar, it doesn't take long to get to the island, which as I said before is connected to the city by a bridge. The island of Pag itself is not very large and is almost completely uninhabited except for the northern tip where there is precisely the city of Novalja, and the beach of Zrce, connected to the city by public transport. The first time I went to Zrce, I was staying in a campsite, and I must admit that staying in the middle of August inside a tent, trying to sleep at night, I think is one of the most uncomfortable and annoying things I have ever done. So, mindful of that experience this time we rented an apartment in the center of town and from there it was very easy to reach all the other places by car.

I love music, and I don't discriminate between genres, if I like something by ear I listen to it without making too many problems. Then dancing in the pool has always been something I've loved. In Zrce the music starts at 9.00 AM and ends at 6.00 AM of the next day. The beach itself is not huge, in fact, it takes just a few minutes to cross it from end to end, but there are several discos. There are also other types of attractions, including the possibility of being able to launch with bungee jumping on the sea, or with this sort of huge slingshot that is loaded and shoots you into the air very strong. The latter in particular I wanted to try, and before launching I was strongly advised to hold on really tight to the ropes so as not to start spinning. Obviously, even after this advice, it was still not ready and when the game started despite the fact that I tried to hold on to the ropes I was still not completely successful and then I started spinning in the air as I went up and it was not a good experience, but after all, because I like adrenaline things I still managed to enjoy the moment.
We stayed on the island for about 4 days, sleeping very little but having a great time.

The last day since we had to leave from Split with the ferry in the evening we decided to go and visit the city, in which none of us had ever been.

Split is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea that serves as the capital of the Split-Dalmatian region. Unlike many other locations in the country, Split's major attraction is not its magnificent beaches, though they are lovely, but its rich historical core, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. There are other locations to visit, but the five most popular among travelers are listed here.

The first thing we wnet to visit is the main touristic attraction of the city: The palace of Diocletian.
Diocletian's Palace is one of the best-preserved Roman architectural masterpieces. It was designed as a hybrid of a lavish imperial mansion and a Roman military camp (castrum), with two main roadways dividing it into four sections. The emperor, his room, and the associated official and religious ceremonies were housed in the southern half of the palace, while the imperial guard, troops, servants, warehouses, and other facilities were housed in the northern half. The palace is a rectangle structure with four enormous corner towers, four lesser towers, and an entrance on each wall.

The lower section of the walls has no apertures, whilst the top story has a massive portico on the southern façade and corridors with arched windows on the other three sides. The residents of the palace, and subsequently the population of Split, altered these areas to their requirements throughout the years, thus the structures within and the outside walls with towers have changed significantly from their original form, but the palace's outlines can still be seen today.

The ruins of Roman monuments may be found inside the Palace, which is today filled with shops, clubs, offices, and houses. The environment is evocative, with an open-air archaeological park where you may relax while eating ice cream while resting against a Roman column. It's incredible how they were able to construct flats "inside" the city walls: it's now one of Split's most vibrant areas.

I recommend getting lost in the small lanes to find pubs climbing the walls, old residences, and even "corridors" above the walls where locals harvest wildflowers!

We also went to visit the dungeons of the palace.
I sincerely didn't like them so much. Large, empty halls with no inscriptions, mosaics, or anything else. Rooms have no markings indicating what they were when they were built.

We aslo went to vist the Green Market.
The atmosphere you feel while browsing through the various stands is truly unique, because this market, chaotic and colorful, represents the true heart of Split, where you can still feel the authentic mentality of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean, among noises, voices, colors, flavors and smells of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The final place we are able to visit was the Cathedral of San Doimio.

Climbing the bell tower to see a bird's-eye view of Split, with the white of the streets and homes contrasted against the blue of the sea, is a must-do.

After we visited the Cathedral we went to the harbor and we took to ferry to come back to Italy.
This was a really fun vacation, and me and my friends ha a lot of fun. Croatia is an amazing place to visit, where you can have fun and also see a lot of amazing places.

Glad that you enjoyed Croatia. Four guys in car on their way to Zrce in police eyes are four druglords so no need to be suprised about incident. Croatian people loves to laugh and has no similarities with croatian police :)

Ahah yeah we met a lot of Croatians during the trip and they were really friendly and nice
