Hello to all friends of Hive,
Today I want to tell you about a part of my summer vacation, beyond Calabria, last July, me and my family spent three days in Sicily. Every time we go to Calabria we choose to visit Sicily, just because, from our holiday home in Calabria, you can reach Sicily in no time!
So every time we go to Calabria on vacation we try to cut out at least two or three days to visit part of Sicily and slowly we will see it all.
This year we stopped in Syracuse and in particular our accommodation was on the island of Ortigia, the most evocative and oldest part of the city.

Oggi voglio parlarvi di una parte della mia vacanza estiva, oltre la Calabria, lo scorso Luglio, io e la mia famiglia abbiamo trascorso tre giorni in Sicilia. Tutte le volte che andiamo in Calabria scegliamo di visitare anche la Sicilia, proprio perchè, dalla nostra casa vacanze in Calabria, è possibile raggiungere la Sicilia in pochissimo tempo!
Quindi tutte le volte che andiamo in Calabria in vacanza cerchiamo di ritagliare almeno due o tre giorni per poter visitare parte della Sicilia e piano piano riusciremo a vederla tutta.
Quest’anno ci siamo fermati a Siracusa e in particolare il nostro alloggio si trovava sull’Isola di Ortigia, la parte più suggestiva e più antica della città.
As I said before we were in Calabria and then we left the boarding of Villa San Giovanni near Reggio Calabria for Messina, the ferry that we always book to cross the strait, allows you to ferry the car, is very convenient as it is possible to move freely and reach any part of Sicily. From Messina we moved to Syracuse, about two and a half hours drive to the south of Sicily.
Come ho detto prima noi ci trovavamo in Calabria e quindi siamo partiti dall’imbarco di Villa San Giovanni vicino a Reggio Calabria per Messina, il traghetto che noi prenotiamo sempre per attraversare lo stretto, consente di traghettare anche l’auto, è comodissimo in quanto così è possibile muoversi liberamente e raggiungere qualsiasi parte della Sicilia. Da Messina ci siamo spostati verso Siracusa, circa due ore e mezza di strada verso il sud della Sicilia.
About the ancient city
The name of the island comes from the Greek and means "quail", it is an island connected to the most recent Syracuse by three bridges, for this reason called the heart of the city.
It is certainly one of the main attractions of eastern Sicily, rich in colors and cultures having been the cradle of different populations, from Greeks, Romans, Spaniards and finally Arabs. He received numerous contaminations both artistically and architecturally.
Il nome dell’isola deriva dal greco e significa “quaglia”, è un’isola collegata alla Siracusa più recente da tre ponti, proprio per questo definita il cuore della città.
E’ sicuramente una delle attrazioni principali della Sicilia orientale, ricca di colori e culture essendo stata la culla di diverse popolazioni, dai greci, ai romani, agli spagnoli e infine gli arabi. Numerose le contaminazioni che ha ricevuto sia artisticamente che architettonicamente.
Castello Maniace
One of the most beautiful places on the island, the castle was built in the thirteenth century. on the order of Frederick II, for defense reasons. It is located in the southernmost part of the island and is a must see especially at sunset.
Uno dei luoghi più belli dell’Isola, il castello è stato costruito nel XIII sec. su ordine di Federico II, per motivi di difesa. Si trova nella parte più a sud dell’isola ed è assolutamente da vedere soprattutto al tramonto.
Tempio di Apollo
It is located right at the beginning of the island of Ortigia, in its westernmost part, and is considered the oldest Doric temple in all of Sicily, its dating dates back to the sixth century. a.c. Unfortunately there are not many remains that remain because it has undergone numerous transformations over time.
Si trova proprio all’inizio dell’Isola di Ortigia, nella sua parte più occidentale, ed è ritenuto il più antico tempio dorico di tutta la Sicilia, la sua datazione risale al VI sec. a.c. Purtroppo non sono molti i resti che ci rimangono poichè ha subito numerose trasformazioni nel corso del tempo.
Cathedral of Ortigia
It is located in Piazza Duomo, to which it gives its name, and is the most spectacular building in the entire square. It was born as a temple dedicated to Athena and later transformed into a Christian basilica, today a spectacular example of Baroque architecture. The square is one of the most beautiful in Italy, rich in art and culture in every form of architecture.
Si trova in Piazza Duomo, alla quale da il nome, ed è l’edificio più spettacolare di tutta la piazza. Nasce come tempio dedicato ad Atena e successivamente trasformato in una basilica cristiana, oggi spettacolare esempio di architettura barocca. La piazza è una delle più belle d’Italia, ricca di arte e cultura in ogni forma di architettura.
And also for today we ended our little trip, but before leaving I want to remind you something, once you arrive in Sicily you must definitely taste the king of Sicilian sweets, his majesty the CANNOLO! You haven’t really seen Sicily if you don’t try a cannoli!

E anche per oggi abbiamo concluso il nostro piccolo viaggio, ma prima di lasciarci voglio ricordarvi una cosa, una volta arrivati in Sicilia dovete assolutamente assaggiare il re dei dolci siciliani, sua maestà il CANNOLO! Non avete veramente visto la Sicilia se non provate un cannolo!
