Hello friends of Hive,
Here I am back from my holiday in southern Italy, I have many places to see, and I want to
start from one in particular, which struck me very much for its beauty.
It’s a small village in Calabria, it’s in the province of Reggio Calabria and it’s called Pentedattilo.

eccomi tornata dalla mia vacanza al sud Italia, ho moltissimi posti da farvi
vedere, e voglio partire da uno in particolare, che mi ha colpito moltissimo per
la sua bellezza.
E’ un piccolo borgo della Calabria, si trova in provincia di Reggio Calabria e sichiama Pentedattilo.
Pentedattilo : The story
It is located on the cliff of Mount Calvary from which it takes its name because
it recalls the fingers of a hand, in fact the name comes from the Greek "pente"
or five and "dactilo" which means fingers.
The village was founded around the ninth century BC. Its location on the
mountain served as a protection for the attacks of enemy peoples, after a
series of enemy attacks and natural phenomena, the population left the
country.
For many years it was defined as a ghost town, since 1980 it began to
repopulate, but still today almost all the houses are empty.
Pentedattilo : La storia
Si trova sulla rupe del monte Calvario dalla quale prende il nome poichè
ricorda le dita di una mano, infatti il nome deriva dal greco “pente” ovvero
cinque e “dactilo” che significa dita.
Il borgo nasce intorno al IX secolo a.C. , la sua ubicazione sul monte serviva
da protezione per gli attacchi dei popoli nemici, dopo una serie di attacchi
nemici e di fenomeni naturali, la popolazione abbandonò il paese.
Per molti anni venne definito come paese fantasma, dal 1980 iniziò a
ripopolarsi, ma ancora oggi quasi tutte le abitazioni sono vuote.
Pentedattilo and its legends :
In the village, however, there is also a legend that seems like a curse, it is said
that that five-fingered hand is that of the devil and that, sooner or later, he
closes his fist to destroy all the houses and its inhabitants, perhaps for this
reason the village has been abandoned in time.
Another story that is handed down, tells of a hidden treasure, brought by the
various populations that have occupied the village, and that has never been
found. It would be in the center of the cliff after being swallowed because of
the continuous struggles between the Abenavoli family and that of the Alberti.
These legends, however imaginative, contribute to make this village even more suggestive and fascinating.
Pentedattilo e le sue leggende :
Sul borgo però vi è anche una leggenda che pare una maledizione, si dice che
quella mano a cinque dita sia quella del diavolo e che, prima o poi, chiuda il suo pugno per distruggere tutte le abitazioni e i suoi abitanti, forse per questo
motivo il borgo è stato abbandonato nel tempo.
Un’ altra storia che viene tramandata, racconta di un tesoro nascosto, portato
dalle varie popolazioni che hanno occupato il borgo, e che non è mai stato
ritrovato. Si troverebbe al centro della rupe dopo essere stato inghiottito a causa delle continue lotte tra la famiglia degli Abenavoli e quella degli Alberti.
Queste leggende per quanto fantasiose contribuiscono a rendere ancora più
suggestivo e affascinante questo borgo.
The village is home to many craft shops, but these are open during the year with the greatest flow of tourists, so in summer and during the holidays.
Nearby there is also the house for the colonies of stray cats that have
repopulated the village.
Suggestive is the view from the rectory, which is accessed for free, from there you can see the sea perfectly.
Il paese ospita moltissime botteghe artigiane, queste però sono aperte nei
periodi dell’anno con maggior flusso di turisti, quindi in estate e durante le
festività.
Nei pressi c’è pure la casa per le colonie di gatti randagi che hanno ripopolato il borgo.
Suggestiva è la vista dalla canonica, a cui si accede gratuitamente, da li si
vede perfettamente il mare.
Continuing the road, always between climbs and descents, you can reach the
bench of kisses, where you must kiss with your half. The bench is framed in
the Calabrian landscape and in the background you can see the sea that
blends with the blue sky.
Continuing you see a table set up with checkers, where you can play freely
and other uninhabited houses.
The visit to this village is mandatory, the landscape is really impressive and
will leave you speechless.
I advise you to dress sporty and use sneakers.

Proseguendo la strada, sempre tra salite e discese, è possibile raggiungere la panchina dei baci, dove è obbligo baciarsi con la propria metà. La panchina si trova incorniciata nel paesaggio calabrese e sullo sfondo è possibile intravedere il mare che si fonde con il blu del cielo.
Proseguendo si vede un tavolino allestito con delle pedine, dove è possibile giocare liberamente e altre abitazioni disabitate.
La visita a questo borgo è obbligatoria, il paesaggio è davvero suggestivo e vi lascerà a bocca aperta.
Vi consiglio di vestirvi sportivi e utilizzare scarpe da ginnastica.
