An Argentinean national emblem: El Gran Café Tortoni, icon of Buenos Aires
Hello my dear friends from Pinmapple and Hive! I hope you are having a beautiful day. In this post I come to share with you an awesome place in Buenos Aires, a historical place where you have to wait in line just to have a cup of coffee.
I'm talking about the iconic Café Tortoni porteño, a coffee shop that was frequented by characters of Argentine literature and culture from the past. Gardel, Jorge Luis Borges, Alfonsina Storni, came to Café Tortoni to chat, to debate, to be inspired, while taking their break and their dose of social life.
The Café Tornoni was inaugurated in 1858, as the tourism page of the City of Buenos Aires tells us, and it is located in the Montserrat neighborhood, especially on Avenida de Mayo.
I had been there when I was a teenager, as my grandmother was a lover of this café, and when she told me that inside there was an image of Jorge Luis Borges, well, my soul simply lit up and I decided that I wanted to visit it. At that time I was not taking pictures and I did not have a blog, so this time I visited Buenos Aires once again, I decided to invite my father to have a coffee there and to make the corresponding photographic record that this place deserves.
It is an emblem of the capital of Argentina, as much as the Moulin Rouge is of Paris.

Un emblema nacional argentino: El Gran Café Tortoni, ícono de Buenos Aires
¡Hola mis queridos amigos de Pinmapple y Hive! Espero que estén pasando un día hermoso. En este post les vengo a compartir un lugar impresionante de Buenos Aires, un lugar histórico para el que hay que hacer fila simplemente para tomar una taza de café.
Les estoy hablando del icónico Café Tortoni porteño, una cafetería a la que acudieron personajes de la literatura y cultura argentina desde antaño. Gardel, Jorge Luis Borges, Alfonsina Storni, se acercaban al Café Tortoni a charlar, a debatir, a inspirarse, al tiempo que tomaban su recreo y su dosis de vida social.
El Café Tornoni fue inaugurado en 1858, como nos cuenta la página de turismo de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires y se encuentra en el BArrio Montserrat, especialmente sobre Avenida de Mayo.
Yo había ido en mi adolescencia, pues mi abuela era amante de este café, y cuando me dijo que dentro había una imagen de Jorge Luis Borges, pues sencillamente mi ser se iluminó y decidí que lo quería conocer. Por aquel entonces yo no andaba sacando fotos ni tenía un blog, así que en esta ocasión que visité Buenos Aires una vez más, decidí invitar a mi padre a tomar un café allí y de paso hacer el correspondiente registro fotográfico que este lugar amerita.
Es un emblema de la capital de Argentina, tanto como el Moulin Rouge lo es de París.
What is it like inside?
It is simply a cultural paradise. Its colonial style has been preserved and over time, it has accumulated paintings, photos and different objects that today are relics of Argentine culture.
There are details in vitro and beautiful paintings on glass on the ceiling, and currently they have added something that was not there before, and are three museum-rooms with memories of the great Argentine characters who passed through there, these are the Eladio Blázquez Room, the César Tiempo Room, and the Alfonsina Room.
These three halls previously fulfilled certain functions, for example, César Tiempo was a hairdresser's shop as you will see in the pictures, but nowadays as I mentioned, they offer us culture and history. I will show you a little of them, because each one is a universe in itself.
¿Cómo es por dentro?
Es sencillamente un paraíso cultural. Su estilo colonial se ha conservado y con el tiempo, se han ido acumulando cuadros, fotos y diferentes objetos que hoy en día son reliquias de la cultura argentina.
Hay detalles en vitró y bonitas pinturas en vidrio en el techo, y actualmente han agregado algo que antes no había, y son tres salas-museo con recuerdos de los grandes personajes argentinos que pasaron por allí, estas son la Sala Eladio Blázquez, la Sala César Tiempo, y el Salón Alfonsina.
Estos tres salones cumplían previamente ciertas funciones, como por ejemplo, César Tiempo era una peluquería como verán en las fotos, pero actualmente como mencioné, nos ofrecen cultura e historia. Les mostraré un poco de ellos, porque cada uno es un universo en sí mismo.
Eladia Blázquez Hall
Here we have small tables that almost look like ornaments, a few mirrors and a huge poster of Buenos Aires. The room is warm and is permanently in semi-darkness, which gives the sensation of taking a little trip back in time.
The lights guide visitors through El Paso and also point out the paintings to which they should pay special attention.
Sala Eladia Blázquez
Aquí tenemos mesitas que casi parecen adornos, unos cuantos espejos y un poster enorme de Buenos Aires. El salón es cálido y se encuentra de manera permanente en penumbra, lo que da la sensación de estar haciendo un pequeño viaje en el tiempo.
Las luces van guiando El Paso y también van señalando al visitante los cuadros a los que debe prestar especial atención.
César Tiempo Room
Here we have thousands of small souvenirs such as magazines, phrases, pictures, emblematic poems that artists have given to the Tortoni and also that have been recorded over time.
In this place there is a large rectangular table around which there are different images, some of them portraits. Although at first glance the room gives the feeling of disorder, when you dwell on the details, you can begin to get lost in the culture of the Tortoni.
In addition, the arrangement of objects and images around the table, give a certain impression of gathering there the energy of these people.
Sala César Tiempo
Aquí tenemos miles de pequeños recuerdos como revistas, frases, cuadros, poemas emblemáticos que los artistas han regalado al Tortoni y también que se han ido registrando a lo largo del tiempo.
En este lugar hay una mesa rectangular grande alrededor de la cual se encuentran diferentes imágenes, algunas de ellas retratos. Aunque a simple vista el salón da la sensación de desorden, cuando uno se detiene en los detalles, puede empezar a perderse en la cultura del Tortoni.
Además, la disposición de los objetos e imágenes alrededor de la mesa, dan cierta impresión de estar reuniendo allí la energía de estas personas.
Alfonsina Hall
For my taste, the most beautiful. It has antique coffee tables that are distributed in a hall and that point to the stage, where there is another table and a grand piano.
You can go up there and take as many pictures as you want, and it is in this place where the shows that give life to this emblematic café of Buenos Aires take place.
The entrance to the Salón Alfonsina is beautiful, and has two huge burgundy backdrops, which somehow made me think they said: here begins the show.
Salón Alfonsina
Para mi gusto, el más bello. Cuenta con mesas de café antiguas que se encuentran distribuidas en un salón y que apuntan al escenario, donde hay otra mesa y un piano de cola.
Allí puedes subir y sacarte cuantas fotos quieras, y es en este lugar en donde se realizan los shows a los que da vida este emblemático café de Buenos Aires.
El ingreso al Salón Alfonsina es precioso, y cuenta con dos enormes bambalinas de color bordó, que de algún modo me hicieron pensar que decían: aquí empieza la función.
The characters
When leaving the Alfonsina Hall and near the bathrooms, there is a table where Gardel, Borges and Alfonsina are gathered, each of them with their particularities, and on this table there is an empty chair, which invites the visitor to sit for a moment next to them.
Clearly this is something that many people do when they visit this cafeteria, since whoever knows about Argentine culture and especially about music and literature, can feel their heart beating very strong when they are there.
Los personajes
Al salir del Salón Alfonsina y cerca de los baños, hay una mesa en donde están reunidos Gardel, Borges y Alfonsina, cada uno de ellos con sus particularidades, y en esta mesa hay una silla vacía, que invita al visitante a sentarse un momento junto a ellos.
Claramente esto es algo que muchas personas hacen cuando visitan esta cafetería, ya que quien conoce de cultura argentina y en especial de música y literatura, puede sentir su corazón latir muy fuerte al estar allí.
If you want to enter the cafe, in the morning it is much more feasible to do so, although you may have to wait about 5 minutes to enter. However, in the afternoon, it is more difficult and it is even advisable to make a reservation, because there are different plays, such as tango, so people get tickets to go, and you will not find a place if you approach spontaneously.
Si quieres ingresar al café, por la mañana es mucho más factible hacerlo, aunque quizás debas esperar unos 5 minutos para poder ingresar. Sin embargo por la tarde, se hace más difícil e incluso es recomendable hacer reserva, porque allí se llevan a cabo diferentes obras, como de tango, por lo que las personas sacan entrada para ir, y directamente no encontrarás lugar si te acercas de manera espontánea.
