| After I had finished my stint at the Ningbo Polytechnic, for once I actually went travelling. Together with my then-girlfriend I went to Yunnan, a province in South-West China, bordering Burma, Laos & Vietnam. I had been invited to visit Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, by a student at the Polytechnic. | Nach dem Ende meiner Zeit am Polytechnikum Ningbo ging ich ausnahmsweise mal auf Reisen. Mit meiner damaligen Freundin besuchte ich Yunnan, eine Provinz in Südwestchina, die an Burma, Laos & Vietnam grenzt. Eine Studentin hatte mich eingeladen, Kunming, die Hauptstadt Yunnans, zu besuchen. |

| As it turned out, the invitation was the usual Chinese pseudo politeness (or perhaps she had not expected for me to come with my girlfriend). When we were in Kunming, she was a no-show. Luckily, we hadn't planned on doing much in Kunming, anyway. It was just a stepping stone towards Dali, Lijiang & Gyalthang. | Die Einladung stellte sich als die übliche, chinesische Pseudofreundlichkeit heraus (oder die Studentin hatte nicht erwartet, daß ich mit Freundin auftauchte). Zum Glück hatten wir sowieso keinen längeren Aufenthalt in Kunming geplant. Es war nur ein Treffpunkt, um dann nach Dali, Lijiang & Gyalthang weiterzureisen. |

| I went to Kunming by plane. & I was lucky. Had a window seat & the window was even fairly clean. Yet more luck: There were some very nice cloud formations. Below you can see 3 or 4 layers of different clouds. | Ich flog nach Kunming & hatte Glück: Fensterplatz mit einigermaßen sauberer Scheibe. In the background is the city centre with the usual highrises, in the foreground newly-built suburbia for the emerging middle classe. | After arrival, I went to Kunming Station to meet my girlfriend who had come from Canton by train. The building in the title pic shows the station with a bull statue in front of it. As you can see below, it was sculpted with almost all the details. | Nach der Landung fuhr ich zum Bahnhof Kunming, um meine Freundin zu treffen, die per Zug aus Kanton gekommen war. | On the way to the hotel I had the chance to take a photo of this water-spraying truck. The water is supposed to bind particles in the air & reduce pollution. Pretty futile, in my opinion. The water dries up in minutes & then the traffic stirs up the dust again. | Auf dem Weg zum Hotel konnte ich mal ein Foto eines wassersprühenden LKW machen. | The tombs were more elaborately built & decorated, at least the newer ones above. They were only a few decades old. But there was another one, obviously older. | & that was the way to Dali. The town will be covered in a separate post. Because on the way back, we again didn't spend much time in Kunming, here a few more pics from the 2nd short visit. Well, not only didn't we spend much time there, my compact camera was stolen & a (luckily older) cell phone. My girlfriend had warned me before that Kunming was a hotspot for pickpockets, but I hadn't expected it to be as bad as it was. (& then, when you tell this story in a China forum, some idiot who "knows Kunming" says "That's impossible. I've been there & it didn't happen to me.") | & das war der Weg nach Dali. Den Ort selber gibt es in einem eigenen Beitrag. Da wir auf dem Rückweg auch nicht lange in Kunming blieben, hier noch einige Bilder vom 2. Besuch. Zu der Tatsache des kurzen Aufenthaltes kommt noch, daß mir die Kompaktkamera & mein (zum Glück älteres) Handy gestohlen wurden. Meine Freundin hatte mich vorher schon gewarnt, daß Kunming ein Paradies für Taschendiebe sei, aber so schlimm wie es war, hatte ich es nicht erwartet. (& dann kommt in einem Chinaforum auch noch ein Idiot daher, der 'Kunming kennt' & behauptet: "Unmöglich! Ich war da & mir ist das nicht passiert.") |

Anyway, the above shows a situation which reminds me of what I saw in South-East Asia (which, arguably, Yunnan is a part of) with people using the railtracks like this. & below is a nice little temple we saw in Kunming: | Na, egal... Usually, every absorber panel has its own water tank, but in this case, dozens of panels are connected to the same huge water tank. | Zuletzt noch eine besondere Art des Sonnenkollektors, den ich sonst nirgends gesehen habe. Üblicherweise hat jedes Panel einen eigenen Wassertank, aber hier teilen sich dutzende Panele einen einzigen, riesigen Tank. |
