| Most of day 1 in Lijiang, we spent in Dayan Old Town, which is pretty much the city centre of Lijiang & the main tourist attraction. But our hotel was in Shuhe Old Town(束河古镇, Shuhe Guzhen) in the north of the city, where we then walked around in the evening of day 1 & for most of day 2. | Den größten Teil des 1. Tages in Lijiang verbrachten wir in der Dayan-Altstadt, die so ziemlich das Stadtzentrum Lijiangs darstellt & die Hauptattraktion bildet. | Yunnan has a huge ethnic variety, anyway, but the area around Lijiang seems to be particularly diverse. There are at least 11 ethnicities with more than 1000 inhabitants. Anyway, it seems that the 'old towns' have been taken over by Han Chinese for the most part. I read, that for example many Nakhi rented out their property in old towns to souvenir vendors from other parts of China, while they bought apartments in modern buildings in other city districts. | In Yunnan gibt es eine große ethnische Vielfalt, aber die Gegend um Lijiang scheint besonders divers zu sein. Es gibt mindestens 11 Ethnien mit mehr als 1000 Einwohnern. Die 'Altstädte' scheinen aber weitgehend von Han-Chinesen übernommen worden zu sein. | After an earthquake in 1997 most of what was left of the old towns (which probably wasn't that much in the first place) disappeared. What you see nowadays has mostly been built in the early 2000's. They tore down many concrete apartment buildings from the 1950's & built these small 'traditional' houses instead. | I don't really buy souvenirs & I abhor the extreme commercialisation you see in China. Lijiang is one of the worst examples I have seen. Yet, even I could not resist & had to buy a shawl for my girlfriend. She liked it, so that was OK, I suppose. & I hope, it was actually produced by one of the local minorities. The girl you see weaving below was probably from the Mosuo. The Chinese regime groups them with the Nakhi as one minority, but they are distinct (& one of the few matri-lineal societies). | Ich kaufe eher keine Souvenirs & ich verabscheue die extreme Kommerzialisierung, die man in China sieht. Lijiang ist eines der schlimmsten Beispiele, die ich kenne. Aber selbst ich konnte nicht widerstehen & mußte meiner Freundin einen Schal kaufen. | Lijiang was definitely worth a trip, even though most of the buildings are far from ancient. Particularly Shuhe is nice for just walking around for a few days. The ridiculous number of shops can get on your nerves, though. Nowadays it seems to be even worse than in 2008. If you want to go there, you should definitely do so weekdays when there is no Chinese holiday nearby. Otherwise it's probably totally overrun by Chinese tourists. More information can be found in the links below. | Lijiang war definitiv einen Besuch wert, auch wenn die meisten Häuser alles andere als alt sind. Besonders Shuhe ist für längere Spaziergänge interessant. Die lächerliche Zahl an Läden kann jedoch gewaltig nerven. Heutzutage ist das wohl noch schlimmer als 2008.
