Nice to greet you again #Pinmapple travel loving friends. This week, before being able to enjoy a few days of vacation, I have been working Tarragona. Because it is a tourist city and close to Port Aventura and Salou, hotel prices were very expensive and I decided then to make the hotel reservation in the town of Vilafranca del Penedés.
Vilafranca del Penedés is a town located in the province of Barcelona, about 45 minutes from the city of Barcelona, as long as the heavy traffic of the A-7 highway allows it. It is a town of about 40,000 inhabitants and is popularly known for being the nerve center of the production of sparkling wines and cavas with denomination of origin Penedés. The reason for choosing to stay in this town and not in another town in the area, was not only due to the high cost of hotels in Tarragona, but also because my friend, Damian, lives in this town. Therefore, it was an ideal situation to be able to coincide after months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On a cultural level, Vilafranca del Penedés, although it is not a very large town, has a very large and beautiful cultural heritage. Advised by my friend Damian, on Thursday I made a route through the historic center of Vilafranca that I will now present.
After leaving work in Tarragona, I arrived at Vilafranca around 18:30 hours, parking my rental car in the parking located in the Rambla de Sant Francesc. I chose this parking because it is very well located to visit the points of interest that I am going to tell you about.
Sant Francesc Boulevard and Manuel Milà i Fontanals Monument
This boulevard is the main square of Vilafranca. It is located in the heart of the town and is a vital civic space of the city as I have seen on other occasions I have visited the city. At the time I arrived at the rambla, the temperature was 38 °C, so there were few people on the rambla, except on the terraces of the bars that surround the rambla.
On this rambla is located the monument to Manuel Milá i Fontanals, who was a philologist and writer born in Vilafranca del Penedés in the 19th century. At the same time, he was and still is an author of aesthetics and theory of literature, being his main theoretical work "Principios de Estética" (Principles of Aesthetics).
Pecero i Tos House
On the left side of the square, facing the statue of Manuel Milá i Fontanals at the entrance to the parking lot is this house. This house is within the modernist route of points of interest of the city. It is a house of the early twentieth century and stands out for its beautiful tile decorations on the top of the facade.
Square of the Villa and Square of San Joan
After the last stop, I intended to head to the basilica of Santa Maria de Vilafranca. However, on the way I found two adjacent squares with three points of cultural interest and in turn some terraces where I could drink a cold beer to refresh myself.
Town Hall of Vilafranca del Penedés.
It is a palace of Gothic origin, was acquired by the consistory in the mid-sixteenth century. It has undergone several reforms giving the main facade a modernist style.
Chapel of San Juan
It is a Gothic chapel that was built in the fourteenth century by the order of the Hospitaller monks of St. John of Jerusalem. One of the curiosities that caught my attention is to see that the bell tower is octagonal in shape.
Macia Palace
The Macia Palace is next to the town hall, in the town square. It is a palatial house of Gothic origin that is included in the architectural heritage of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Jaume I Square
100 meters from the town hall square, through a narrow street, you can reach the back of the basilica of Santa Maria. Surrounding the basilica on its left side, you can reach Jaume I square where we have four points of interest of the city.

Basilica of Santa Maria de Vilafranca del Penedes
It is the biggest architectural attraction of the city. It is located in the vicinity of the square Jaume I and is one of the buildings belonging to the medieval heritage of the city. It was originally a church that was renovated in the thirteenth century and in the early twentieth century was proclaimed a minor basilica. I personally liked the building and its surroundings with the square and the Baltá Palace right next to it.

Right next to the basilica is this beautiful palace. It is also a construction of the XIII-XIV century of Gothic style.
Jaume I Square and the Castellers monument
One of the tourist attractions of Villafranca are its famous human castles. This tradition goes back many centuries. During the popular festivities held in August, castle championships are held where castellers from various municipalities compete to form the best human castle.
The day before this route, I had gone to dinner with my friends to the restaurant of the association of castellers of Vilafranca. There I was able to take a picture of a large mural where I can show you what a castell is during the festivities.
Due to the great tradition of the Castells, in the Jaume I square there is a sculpture in honor of the castellers.

VINSEUM- Museum of Wine Cultures
It is a museum located in a former palace of the kings of the Crown of Aragon, located in the Jaume I square between the town hall and the access to the basilica square of Vilafranca del Penédes. As I had indicated earlier, Vilafranca is a very important wine town of sparkling wines and cavas and, therefore, is very rooted in the wine culture.

El motivo, de la elección de hospedarme en esta localidad y no en otra localidad del entorno, no solo fue debía al alto coste de los hoteles en Tarragona, sino que también se debió a que mi amigo, Damián, vive en esta localidad. Por tanto, era una situación ideal para poder coincidir después de meses debido a la pandemia del Covid-19.
A nivel cultural, Vilafranca del Penedés, a pesar de que no es una localidad de muy gran tamaño, presenta un patrimonio cultural muy amplio y muy bonito. Asesorado por mi amigo Damián, el jueves realicé una ruta por el centro histórico de Vilafranca que ahora os voy a presentar.
Tras salir del trabajo en Tarragona, llegue sobre las 18:30 horas a Vilafranca aparcando mi automóvil de alquiler en el parking situado en la Rambla de Sant Francesc. Seleccioné este parking porque está muy bien situado para visitar los puntos de interés que les voy a comentar.
Rambla de Sant Francesc y Monumento a Manuel Milà i Fontanals
Esta rambla es la plaza principal de Vilafranca. Está situada en pleno centro de la localidad y es un espacio cívico vital de la ciudad como he podido ver en otras ocasiones que he visitado la ciudad. A la hora que llegue a la rambla, había 38 °C de temperatura, por lo que había pocas personas por la rambla, salvo en las terrazas de los bares que rodean la rambla.
En esta rambla está situado el monumento a Manuel Milá i Fontanals, que fue un filólogo y escritor nacido en Vilafranca del Penedés en el siglo XIX. A su vez, fue y sigue siendo un autor de estítica y de teoría de la literatura, siendo su principal obra teórica “Principios de Estética”.
Casa Pecero i Tos
En el margen izquierdo de la plaza, tomando de frente la estatua de Manuel Milá i Fontanals a la altura de la entrada al parking se encuentra esta casa. Esta casa se encuentra dentro de la ruta modernista de puntos de interés de la ciudad. Es una casa de principios del siglo XX y destaca por sus bonitos adornos de azulejo que hay en la parte superior de la fachada.
Plaza de la Villa y Plaza de San Joan
Tras la última parada, tenía la intención de dirigirme a la basílica de Santa Maria de Vilafranca. Sin embargo, de camino me encontré con dos plazas contiguas con tres puntos de interés cultural y a su vez unas terrazas donde poder beber una cerveza fría para refrescarme.
Ayuntamiento de Vilafranca del Penedés.
Es un palacio de origen gótico, fue adquirido por el consistorio a mediados del siglo XVI. Ha sufrido varias reformas dándole a la fachada principal un estilo modernista.
Capilla de San Juan
Es una capilla gótica que fuera fue construida en el siglo XIV por el orden de los monjes hospitalarios de San Juan de Jerusalén. Una de las curiosidades que me llamó la atención es ver que la torre del campanario es de forma octogonal.
Palacio Maciá
El Palacio Maciá está junto al ayuntamiento, en la plaza de la villa. Se trata de una casa palaciega de origen gótico que está incluida dentro del patrimonio arquitectónico de la Generalitat de Cataluña.
Plaza Jaume I
A 100 metros de la plaza del ayuntamiento, a través de una estrecha calle, se puede llegar a la parte trasera de la basílica de Santa Maria. Rodeando la basílica por su lado izquierdo se puede llegar a la plaza Jaume I donde tenemos cuatro puntos de interés de la ciudad.
Basílica de Santa Maria de Vilafranca del Penedes
Es el mayor reclamo arquitectónico de la ciudad. Está situada en las inmediaciones de la plaza Jaume I y es una de las edificaciones pertenecientes al patrimonio medieval de la ciudad. En su origen era una iglesia que fue reformada en el siglo XIII y ya a principios del siglo XX fue proclamada basílica menor. A mí, personalmente, me ha gustado mucho la edificación y el entorno que tiene con la plaza y el palacio Baltá justamente al lado.
Palacio Baltá
Justamente al lado de la basílica se encuentra este bonito palacio. Es también una construcción del siglo XIII-XIV de estilo gótico.
Plaza Jaume I y el monumento a los Castells
Uno de los reclamos turísticos de Villafranca son sus famosos castillos humanos. Esta tradición remonta muchos siglos atrás. Durante las fiestas populares que se celebran en agosto se disputan campeonatos de castillos donde los castellers de varios municipios compiten por formar el mejor castillo humano.
El día anterior a realizar esta ruta, había ido a cenar con mis amigos al restaurante de la asociación de castellers de Vilafranca. En él pude tomar una foto de un gran mural donde os puedo mostrar lo que es un castell durante las fiestas.
Debido a la gran tradición existente por los Castells, en la plaza Jaume I se encuentra una escultura en honor a los castellers.

VINSEUM- Museo de las culturas del Vino
Es un museo situado en un antiguo palacio de los reyes de la Corona de Aragón, situado en la plaza Jaume I entre el ayuntamiento y el acceso a la plaza de basílica de Vilafranca del Penédes. Como había indicado anteriormente, Vilafranca es una localidad vinícola muy importante de vinos espumosos y de cavas y, por tanto, está muy arraigado la cultura al vino.

Tras esta visita me dirigí de nuevo a la rambla Sant Francesc y consultando mi teléfono vi que me quedaba una capilla cercana que también está en las guías turísticas de la ciudad y me acerqué a fotografiarla.
Tras esta última visita, me dirigí al parking donde había aparcado mi coche y me dirigí a descansar al hotel.
