Today, I will give you an insight into our recent work trip. We had been accommodated in la Línea de la Concepción in Spain. Para llegar a nuestro lugar de trabajo teníamos que cruzar diariamente la frontera española, de la UE, con el vecino Reino Unido, Gibraltar.

Para llegar a nuestro lugar de trabajo teníamos que cruzar diariamente la frontera española, de la UE, con el vecino Reino Unido, Gibraltar.


The border, with all its inventory, staff and protocols looks completely different on either side. While the Spanish part is built along the pragmatism of burocratic logic, the Gibraltarian side sets you back into a forgotten UK country side rail way station today. The wooden interior, shapes colours and forms of all these building materials imported from UK… customs police used to carry largest tea/coffee termos implies a pretty coffee intense working environment, whereby Spanish Border has ID card recognition systems, you wouldn’t even have to face anyone. I did take pictures from within the border, but they aren't doing the trick. It is culturally a weird experience, the architecture emphasises UK normalities, but you are still actually in South of Spain."no stopping" you must cross the airfield briskly. Don't start thinking, you will be confused, just walk and don't ask. The fast walking Londoner blends instantly. The rules to enter Gibraltar is all messed up since Brexit. Police has been super cooperative to us though. Unrelated to this story, my friend described a comparable moment he had experienced once at a border, where the officer stamping his mates passport while stating “I do not have the authority to do this”. - a moment of mental liberation. tourism down time atm, don't know how it is during up time? do you? It was really peaceful to walk around along the hill. While walking up the hill, it was so cool to see those garden terraces alongside the footpath. These were green and fruity patches grown in community, away from the actual housings. Their accessibility and impression left a gentle homey feeling. In this image you can see about 25 km away Morocco! The closer mountain is called Jabal Musa, جبل موسى. You can see it well from Gibraltars higher terraces. After a couple of days of activity in Gib it turned out that we had been in touch with a generation of Gibraltarians whose parents lived through the days of Francos dictatorship. It was told that during that time people were separated from their families and had to figure out ways of keeping it all together. There were experiences of a blockade in the border area. Gibraltar had been cut off from mainland trade during battles between UK and the Spanish. Nos contaron que durante esa época la gente se vio separada de sus familias y tuvo que ingeniárselas para mantenerlo todo junto. Hubo experiencias de bloqueo en la zona fronteriza. Gibraltar había quedado aislado del comercio continental durante las batallas entre el Reino Unido y los españoles.

After crossing the airfield you will be confronted with this collage. It iiis the main trade of any local tourism management to properly kneel into the history of the destination and remember it in a statue or an installation. a lot of the antique and medieval christian symbolic references seem to be there. Can't see references on this one to the arabic time frame. Looking forward to see this collage grow in future decades... The statue on the left is a rotary international wheel.. Es el principal oficio de cualquier gestión turística local arrodillarse adecuadamente en la historia del destino y recordarla en una estatua o una instalación. muchas de las referencias simbólicas cristianas antiguas y medievales parecen estar ahí. The local language sounds south spanish, with a lot of british and arabic flowers and tones. It has its own latin theme to it. Wikipedia says it is called Llanito.	El idioma local suena al sur del español, con muchas flores y tonos británicos y árabes. Tiene su propia temática latina. Wikipedia dice que se llama Llanito.


We were laughing too much about how challenging it was for my mate to arrive in UK and find out, if a person actually had asked a question or not… as for example a greeting “are you alright?” As in “r u aight” wouldn’t be an actual question. He remembered, it happened here in small nation Gib again, where he observed too that people would greet each other this way and simply move on with their lives. Along the east side of the peninsula I snapped this image from the back of the bus while driving to work. the mountain is actually 426m high. The building may be 40m. Gibraltar being a nation and a city under the Common wealth is actually named to a place and a person that has been quite relevant to its history. Tariq Ibn Ziyad was a leader who had conquered the place during the early 8th century. Wikipedia sais Gib is deriving from arabic dschabal, meaning mountain. The mountain of Tariq. I come to believe Gibraltar and La Línea is more like a symbiotic system. Gibraltarian population is about 35000 people, whilst 10000 people come across the border from La Línea daily to work. A total of around 11 Million visitors are estimated per year, which averages around 30k tourists per day travelling into Gibraltar through La Línea as well. Gib is super densely populated with 5000 people per square km. Imagine what it must be like to live like these monkeys on the rock? The land before the rock is referred to as "el campo de Gibraltar". La Línea and its surrounding lands used to be something like the fruit and crop chamber of Gibraltar.	Llego a creer que Gibraltar y La Línea son más bien un sistema simbiótico. La población gibraltareña es de unos 35.000 habitantes, mientras que 10.000 personas cruzan diariamente la frontera de La Línea para trabajar. En total, se calcula que hay unos 11 millones de visitantes al año, lo que supone una media de unos 30.000 turistas diarios que entran en Gibraltar también a través de La Línea. Have you have heard of “La Línea” the documentary? My mate was talking about it,- a “full on narco traffic documentary on La Línea”. I was amazed and a bit baffled, hadn’t we walked freely the garden of Gibraltar the day before. Yes, there were people with Camouflage Clothing, an equally covered RV, barking and suffering dogs. I didn’t really wanna watch it.	¿Has oído hablar del documental "La Línea"? Mi compañero hablaba de él, un "documental sobre el tráfico de narcos en La Línea". Me quedé sorprendido y un poco desconcertado, ¿no habíamos paseado libremente por el jardín de Gibraltar el día anterior? Sí, había gente con ropa de camuflaje, una caravana igualmente cubierta, perros ladrando y sufriendo. La verdad es que no quería verlo.

La Línea is drawn into the shadow of “the Rock”. It seems to be apparent that both cities depend on each other whilst both places are connected to the world in their own way. Gib is a refugium and a distribution hub for UK goods and ppl. La Línea is connected to mainland Europe. I don’t know either what all of this means. Maybe do you? So, Netflix had turned a “Netflix Original” on the place. I didn’t want to watch it, because I believe Netflix does this thing where they put people into images and music together and then im sitting there mostly overwhelmed, all the time. To me, even the title not including Gibraltar is already too much. So,- this far I am openminded. If you are wondering how the personification of La Línea may be called.. We did meet her. The name is Alexia. She instantly made us feel comfortable by showing intolerance towards bullshit. We ordered beer, we were actually in search for home cooked food. So she literally had home cooked food within minutes ready for us. A delicious premium dish was conjured sourced from local trust connection. Instant gratitude on our faces. Alexia proceeded to announce a happy hour. 4 jägerbombs for 2, we agreed. Shwomp, shwomp, 2 bombs each made the mix in the belly unbearable. Alexia was done with her shift and proceeded to the Irish pub opposite. Her disappearance had left a hole in the bar, we asked for the bill. Eventually it wasn’t happy hour and she just had written four bombs to animate us. We had home cooked food for a week or so…	Si te preguntas cómo se puede llamar la personificación de La Línea.. La conocimos. Se llama Alexia. Al instante nos hizo sentir cómodos mostrando intolerancia hacia las tonterías. Pedimos cerveza, en realidad estábamos en busca de comida casera. Así que, literalmente, tenía comida casera en cuestión de minutos lista para nosotros. Un delicioso plato de primera calidad. La gratitud instantánea en nuestras caras. Alexia procedió a anunciar una hora feliz. 4 jägerbombs para 2, acordamos. Shwomp, shwomp, 2 bombas cada uno hizo la mezcla en el vientre insoportable. Alexia terminó su turno y se dirigió al pub irlandés de enfrente. Su desaparición había dejado un hueco en el bar, pedimos la cuenta. Al final no era la hora feliz y ella sólo había escrito cuatro bombas para animarnos. Tuvimos comida casera durante una semana más o menos...
