I spent a few days in Buenos Aires at the end of last year and on a tour I took with a guide we went up to a terrace on a 15th floor, and from there we observed several buildings, including the new skyscrapers in Puerto Madero. Talking about all those buildings, the guide said that one of them was the tallest building in Latin America. I pointed out that this was not the case because, as far as I knew, the tallest building in Latin America was in Mexico and the tallest in the Southern Cone was in Santiago de Chile. The woman insisted that the Argentinean was the tallest and I didn't want to argue, but I verified it as soon as I could. I was right.
Pasé algunos días en Buenos Aires al final del año pasado y en un recorrido que hice con una guía subimos a una terraza en un piso 15, y desde allí observamos varios edificios, incluyendo los rascacielos nuevos de Puerto Madero. Hablando de todos esos edificios, la guía dijo que uno de ellos era el edificio más alto de latino américa. Le indiqué que no era así porque, según sabía yo, el edificio más alto de América Latina estaba en México y el más alto del cono Sur estaba en Santiago de Chile. La mujer insistió en que el argentino era el más alto y no quise discutir, pero lo verifiqué en cuanto pude. Yo tenía razón.
The Obispado de Monterrey Towers are 305 meters high and a little below that, at exactly 300 meters, stands the Gran Torre Costanera, popularly known as the Costanera Center. Located in the Chilean capital, specifically in the Providencia district, the Costanera Center houses two hotels, a shopping mall and has a height of 62 floors and two more on the roof. To access you must enter the mall which has about six or seven levels with stores, supermarkets, multiple movie theaters, car dealerships, a Hard Rock Café, a food fair and a more elegant restaurant area. This shopping center is one of the busiest spots in the city, not only because of the wide range of stores and spaces, but also - and above all - because of its privileged location, quite central and with easy access to a large number of means of transportation. The Providencia district is equidistant from several densely populated areas of the city. It's close to Ñuñoa, downtown Santiago, Las Condes and Vitacura, so on any given day you will find a large concentration of people. Last minute Christmas shopping is usually a time of great agglomeration in this place that, in addition, can be seen almost from any point of the surroundings due to its height. That is why I share with you in this post several pictures I have taken of the Gran Torre Costanera from different points of the city and at different times of the year. The building has become a representative icon of the city of Santiago and that is why you will be able to see it on postcards, key chains, t-shirts and other souvenirs available in specialized stores.
Las Torres Obispado de Monterrey poseen una altura de 305 metros y un poco por debajo de eso, con 300 metros exactos, se erige la Gran Torre Costanera, conocida popularmente como el Costanera Center. Ubicado en la capital chilena, específicamente en la comuna de Providencia, el Costanera Center alberga dos hoteles, un centro comercial y tiene una altura de 62 pisos y dos más en la azotea. Para ingresar debes entrar al centro comercial que tiene unos seis o siete niveles con tiendas, supermercados, múltiples salas de cine, concesionarios de vehículos, un Hard Rock Café, una feria de comidas y una zona de restaurantes más elegantes. Este centro comercial es uno de los puntos más concurridos de la ciudad, no sólo por la gran oferta de tiendas y espacios sino - y sobre todo - por su ubicación privilegiada, bastante céntrica y con fácil acceso a un gran número de medios de transporte. La comuna de Providencia está a una distancia equidistante de varios sectores muy poblados de la ciudad. Está cerca de Ñuñoa, del centro de Santiago, Las Condes y Vitacura, así que en cualquier día que se visite el lugar uno se va a encontrar con una gran concentración de personas. Las compras navideñas de última hora suelen ser un momento de mucha aglomeración en este lugar que, además, puede verse casi desde cualquier punto de los alrededores debido a su altura. Por eso les comparto en este post varias fotografías que he tomado de la Gran Torre Costanera desde diferentes puntos de la ciudad y en distintas épocas del año. El edificio se ha convertido en un ícono representativo de la ciudad de Santiago y por eso lo van a poder ver en postales, llaveros, camisetas y otros souvenirs disponibles en las tiendas especializadas.
If you want to climb to the top of the tower and observe the city from above, you can do so. At the lowest level of the mall there is an access where you must buy a ticket that has a general price of 18 USD and take an elevator that in about forty seconds or so will leave you on the 62nd floor. Once there you will find two levels, the 63rd and 64th floor, which have a 360° view of the city. The first one is roofed, has a cafeteria and several spots to take pictures; the last level is open-roofed, so if you go at night it can be a bit cold.
Si quieren subir hasta lo más alto de la torre y observar la ciudad desde las alturas, lo pueden hacer. En el nivel más bajo del centro comercial hay un acceso en el que deben comprar un boleto que tiene un precio general de 18 USD y tomar un ascensor que en unos cuarenta segundos más o menos los dejará en el piso 62. Una vez allí van a encontrar dos niveles, el piso 63 y el 64, que tienen una vista de 360° de la ciudad. El primero de ellos está techado, tiene una cafetería y varios spots para tomar fotos; el último nivel es a techo descubierto, así que si van en la noche puede hacer algo de frío.
To be honest I don't visit shopping malls much. I only go there when I want to buy something specific in a store or when I want to go to the movies and the movie is only available in the multiplexes of these places (I usually prefer independent cinemas). However, I do recognize that the Costanera Center is a place that everyone who visits the city of Santiago should know, not only for the view from its rooftop but also because it represents well an important part of Chilean society, which is consumerism. I do not say it as a criticism, nor do I highlight it as something positive - those judgments are left for each one to make - but Chileans usually go to visit these cathedrals of buying and selling items and they are always looking for the new model of cell phone, the latest collection of this or that clothing brand, etc; and obviously a shopping mall is the perfect place to satisfy this desire to buy, consume, eat, spend, etc. And of course, as there are many options of things to do at all levels, young people tend to gather to hang out, go to the movies, eat something, etc., in the different shopping centers of the city, of which one of the most prominent is this one. In addition, as I mentioned, there is very good connectivity in the sector and nearby there are two subway stations and dozens of bus stops where different buses pass through to multiple points of the city. I share with you how the tower looks from - from left to right - General Holley Street, Uruguay Park and Bicentennial Park.
Para ser sincero yo no soy de visitar mucho los centros comerciales. Voy únicamente cuando quiero comprar algo específico en una tienda o cuando quiero ir al cine y la película está disponible sólo en las salas múltiples de estos lugares (por lo general prefiero los cines independientes). Sin embargo, sí reconozco que el Costanera Center es un lugar que deben conocer todos quienes visiten la ciudad de Santiago, no sólo por la vista desde su azotea sino porque representa bien una parte importante de la sociedad chilena que es el consumismo. No lo digo como una crítica, ni lo destaco como algo positivo - esos juicios quedan para que los haga cada quien - pero los chilenos suelen ir mucho a visitar estas catedrales de compra y venta de artículos y suelen estar siempre en la búsqueda de adquirir el nuevo modelo de teléfono móvil, prendas de la última colección de tal o cual marca de ropa, etc; y obviamente un centro comercial es el lugar perfecto para satisfacer este deseo de comprar, consumir, comer, gastar, etc. Y claro, como hay muchas opciones de cosas para hacer en todos los niveles, los jóvenes suelen juntarse a pasar el rato, ir al cine, comer algo, etc., en los diferentes centros comerciales de la ciudad, de los cuales uno de los más destacados es este. Además, como ya lo mencioné, hay muy buena conectividad en el sector y cerca hay dos estaciones de metro y decenas de paraderos por donde pasan diferentes buses a múltiples puntos de la ciudad. Les comparto cómo se ve la torre desde - de izquierda a derecha - la calle General Holley, el Parque Uruguay y el Parque Bicentenario.
