On the beautiful beaches of Conil stands a solitary four-story tower built of stone. There are no more buildings for miles around. At the time it was part of a walled fort that defended the coast from pirate attacks. Here lived workers from the almadraba and the soldiers who protected the bastion. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 produced a tsunami that devastated the fort, leaving only the solid tower standing.
En las bonitas playas de Conil se erige una solitaria torre de cuatro plantas construida en piedra. No hay más construcciones en kilómetros a la redonda. En su momento era parte de un fuerte amurallado que defendía la costa de ataques piratas. Aquí vivían trabajadores de la almadraba y los soldados que protegían en baluarte. El terremoto de Lisboa de 1755 produjo un Tsunami que arrasó el fuerte quedando solamente en pie la sólida torre.
If we look closely we can see the remains of the walled city.
Si nos fijamos bien podemos ver los restos de la ciudad amurallada.
The tower has an elevated entrance that faces north. From it we can see the interior. Its four floors have been destroyed by the passage of time. You can see the holes where the wooden piles that supported the ground entered. Although it was a robust construction to be able to hold a cannon, the passage of time or perhaps a fire has left the tower completely hollow.
La torre tiene una entrada elevada que da al Norte. Desde ella podemos ver el interior. Sus cuatro plantas han quedado destruidas por el paso del tiempo. Se puede ver los orificios donde entraban los pilotes de madera que sujetaban el suelo. Aunque era una construcción robusta para poder sujetar un cañón, el paso del tiempo o quizás algún incendio ha dejado la torre completamente hueca.
Hundreds of birds nest inside. If we look at the side you can see a part of the curved tower where the spiral staircase was located.
En su interior anidan cientos de aves. Si nos fijamos en un lateral se puede ver una parte de la torre curvada donde se encontraba la escalera de caracol.
