I was really looking forward to returning to the city of Puerto Cabello, in the state of Carabobo, Venezuela. It's a city with so much history, and many of its spaces are still fighting against the elements to remain standing. They're being rescued by people who love the history of this country and want future generations to admire these places too. Efforts have been made to restore many old sites that date back more than 200 years. One of them is the Casa Herrera, which has been converted into a museum, and I’d been longing to visit it ever since I found out.

Tenía muchas ganas de volver a la ciudad de Puerto Cabello, en el estado Carabobo, Venezuela. Es una ciudad que cuenta con mucha historia y muchos espacios que luchan contra los elementos de la naturaleza, para mantenerse en pie y ser rescatados por quienes aman la historia de esta pais y desean que las generaciones futuras admiren también estos espacios. Se han hecho esfuerzos por restaurar muchas sitios antiguos que datan de mas de 200 años, uno de ellos es la casa Herrera que fue convertida en museo y desde que lo supe anhelaba visitarla.
It was a wonderful experience. I love history, so I took a ton of photos. I have so many and so much to say that I think this might be one of my longest posts in a long time. I should start by telling you where this house-turned-museum is located. It's right between two streets in what's considered the city's historic center: Calle Lanceros and Calle Bolívar. This area was the site of battles that helped seal Venezuela's independence and the complete surrender of the Spanish.

Debo empezar por contarles dónde está ubicada esta casa que fue transformada en museo, está exactamente entre dos calles de lo que se considera el casco histórico de la ciudad, la Calle Lanceros y la Bolívar. En este sitio se desarrollaron luchas que ayudaron a sellar la independencia de Venezuela y la completa rendición de los Españoles.

Before becoming the museum it is today, the Casa Herrera was the Museum of Arms in 1967. However, it originally belonged to the Herrera family, and its construction is believed to have been completed in 1790. The Herreras were a prominent family in the city, involved in commerce and the politics of the time. They belonged to the Order of the Knights of Calatrava, the first military-religious brotherhood founded in medieval Spain. This is why when you enter the home’s main hall, you find sculptures that evoke the era of the struggle for independence and coins related to commerce.
La casa de los Herrera, antes de convertirse en el museo que es ahora, fue el Museo de las Armas en 1967, pero originalmente perteneció a una familia Herrera y se cree se terminó su construcción en el año 1790. Los Herreras fueron una familia prominente de la ciudad, dedicada al comercio y asuntos políticos de la época, pertenecieron a la Orden de los Caballeros de Calatrava, la primera hermandad militar-religiosa nacida en España medieval. Es por esta razón que al entrar al vestíbulo de la casa encontramos estas esculturas que evocan la época de la lucha por la independencia y monedas alusivas al comercio.

This main hall is surrounded by what were once rooms and offices, each now transformed into an exhibition space. The visit is guided, and the first thing you see is the area dedicated to the indigenous people who occupied the land before the city was built. The indigenous group that predominated in the area from around 1500 BC was the Arawak. This room displays crafts from that period, which are deteriorated from age. The most notable items are the Mortuary Urns, large vessels where this indigenous group buried their dead.
Este vestíbulo está rodeado por lo que alguna vez fueron habitaciones y oficinas, ahora cada una transformada en espacios de exhibición del museo. La visita es guiada y lo primero que ves es el espacio dedicado a los pueblos indígenas que ocuparon las tierras antes de ser construida la ciudad. El grupo aborigen que predominó en la zona aprox desde 1500 años A.C. fue el Arawaco. Esta habitación presenta artesanía datada de esa época, deteriorada por el paso de los años, destacando las Urnas Mortuorias, grandes vasijas donde este grupo aborigen sepultaba a sus muertos.

The tour guides lead us to a space dedicated to historical events and landmarks. In the city, you can still find the Casa Guipuzcoana, the first trading post in Venezuela; El Fortín Solano, and the Castillo de San Felipe, positioned on the mountain and by the sea respectively for the city's defense. Replicas of Spanish armor, a musket, and an old route map drawn by the Spanish are also on display.

En la ciudad aún se encuentra en pie la casa Guipuzcoana el primer lugar de comercio de Venezuela, El Fortín Solano junto al Castillo de San Felipe** dispuestos uno en la montaña y otro a orilla del mar para la defensa de la ciudad. Se muestran también réplicas de la armadura española y un mosquete y un mapa de ruta antiguo trazado por los españoles.

One of the objects I was most fascinated by was the original act of the Municipal Assembly from 1826. It details the discussion and final decision regarding the fate of the enslaved people who arrived in Puerto Cabello aboard the Roma libre brigantine, which is believed to be the last slave ship of that era. Slavery had already been abolished in the country, and it was no longer legal to trade enslaved people. Next to the document, there's a transcription and a scale model of the ship.
Uno de los objetos que me encanto fue el acta original de la Asamblea Municipal para el año 1826 donde se plasma la discusión y posterior decisión de la suerte de los esclavos que llegaron a Puerto Cabello a bordo del Bergantín Roma libre, el cual se cree fue el último barco negrero de la época. En el pais ya se había abolido la esclavitud y no se permitía comerciar con esclavos. Junto a las actas se encuentra una transcripción y un modelo a escala del barco en cuestión.

Roma Libre brigantineSince it was a port city, commerce was dominant. Affluent families settled here to keep a close eye on their businesses, which is why homes like this one were built. In several of these homes, large and sturdy safes were found, which these families used to protect their valuables. It's said that if you rub them, they'll bring you good luck.
Al ser una ciudad portuaria el comercio era lo que predominaba. Familias de alcurnia se asentaron en esta ciudad para cuidar de cerca sus negocios, fue por esta razón que casas como esta fueron construidas. En varios de estos hogares se encontraron cajas fuertes de gran tamaño y robustez que usaban estas familias para resguardar sus bienes, se dice que que si las frotas te dan buena suerte.
The ground-floor tour ends, and we move up to the second floor, which houses the spaces I enjoyed the most. The first is a large-scale model made to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle called The Taking of Puerto Cabello. Accompanying this model is a large mural that divides and describes the events in 12 moments, as well as original documents, records, and letters that illustrate the hardships the Spanish endured during the siege by the patriotic forces.
Termina el tour por la planta baja y pasamos al primer piso el cual alberga los espacios que más me gustaron del museo. El primero una gran maqueta que se hizo en conmemoración de los 200 años de la batalla llamada La Toma de Puerto Cabello. A esta maqueta le acompaña un gran mural que divide y describe los hechos en 12 momentos, asi como tambien documentacion, actas y cartas originales que ilustra las penurias que se vivían los españoles durante el asedio de las fuerzas patriotas.

The next space we visit is dedicated to Italo Pizzolante, a "porteño" (person from Puerto Cabello) born into a respected and hard-working Italian family at the beginning of the 20th century. He is famous for composing the song Motivos, which has been covered by many artists around the world. He also composed the city's anthem and had a notable public life, serving as mayor on two occasions. He was also a photography enthusiast. The display shows some of his belongings, such as cameras, typewriters, radios, and a small framed piece of the original text of the song "Motivos."
El siguiente espacio que visitamos esta dedicado Italo Pizzolante, quien fue un porteño nacido en el seno de una respetada y trabajadora familia italiana a principios del siglo XX. Es famoso por ser el compositor de la canción Motivos que ha sido versionada por muchos artistas alrededor del mundo. También es el compositor del himno de la ciudad y una destacada vida pública, llegando a ser alcalde en dos ocasiones, también apasionado de la fotografía, el stand muestra parte de sus pertenencias, como camaras fotograficas, maquinas de escribir, radios y un pequeño cuadro que enmarca el texto original de la composición de la canción Motivos.

After this space dedicated to Italo Pizzolante, we reach the lookout point. You access it via an old wooden staircase that is incredibly well-preserved for being 230 years old, highlighting the quality of the construction and materials from that era. It's narrow, fitting only one person at a time, but it feels sturdy and strong. It was likely reinforced to continue supporting the number of people who use it, as it gives access to the terrace—the museum's main attraction.
Después de este espacio dedicado Italo Pizzolante, llegamos al Mirador, se accede a través de una escalera antigua de madera que se conserva muy bien para tener 230 años, destacando la calidad de la construcción y de los materiales de aquella época. Es estrecha y solo cabe una persona, pero se siente firme y robusta, seguramente fue apuntalada para que continúe soportando la cantidad de personas que la usan, ya que da acceso a través de sus dos tramos a la terraza, el principal atractivo que ofrece el museo.

From the lookout, you can see the museum's central space or main hall, in addition to a 360-degree view of the city. From there, you can see Bolívar Plaza, the cathedrals, the boardwalk, the entrance to the pier, and other colonial-era buildings. Although Puerto Cabello is a coastal city, its waters are calm and the breeze is minimal. You can feel the humid heat, and even at the top of this small lookout, there's no breeze. However, the view is spectacular, especially after hearing the explanation of the city's historical development and being able to locate the mentioned sites from above.
Ya en el mirador puedes observar el espacio central del museo o vestíbulo, además de una visión 360 de la ciudad, donde se observan la plaza Bolívar, las catedrales, el malecón, la entrada al muelle y demás edificaciones de la época colonial. Puerto Cabello a pesar de ser una ciudad costera, sus aguas son calmas, la brisa es escasa y se puede sentir el calor húmedo, aun en lo alto de este pequeño mirador no hay brisa, pero se aprecia la vista, más aún cuando vienes de recibir una explicación del desarrollo de los hechos históricos de la ciudad y logras ubicar los espacio mencionados desde lo alto.
With the beautiful city views and a feeling of deep reflection after everything I learned, you say goodbye to these spaces. I'm left with a strong desire to return to visit other historical places that are also being restored. My heart is filled with emotion for the history and legacy of the people who fought for my country, and I'm even happier to see that there are those who care about preserving these spaces so that future generations can learn about their roots.
Con las bellas vistas de la ciudad y con un sentimiento de profunda reflexión, tras todo lo aprendido, te despides de estos espacios. Me quedo con muchos deseos de volver para visitar otros lugares históricos que también están siendo recuperados. Mi corazón se llena de emoción por la historia y legado de las personas que lucharon por mi pais, me alegro mucho mas al ver que hay quienes se preocupan por conservar estos espacios para que las siguientes generaciones conozcan sus raíces.
