I was struck by the fact that there are three religious centers in Havana that bear the same name or are dedicated to the same saint. Two churches and a cathedral. All three are under the patronage of Saint Francis of Paola.

That's an interesting fact. But the only one I really know and have touched its walls, and which I can attest to in religious terms, is the so-called "Iglesia de Paula" in the historic center of the city of Havana.
Walking along the wide avenue of the port from the castle at the tip to the right of the entrance to the bay, to its confines where the elevated railroad tracks that evacuated part of the cargo from the ships docking in the port to different commercial destinations meet
the daily life of the avenue, closely linked to the wall that is a continuation of the famous "Malecón wall."
With the splendid view of the Cabaña fortress, part of Casablanca, and the atmospheric coastline of the town of Regla in the background. The different sculptural structures flaunting modernity and contemporaneity, we arrive after enjoying the floating wooden walkway right next to the Albear aqueduct walkway, we find ourselves on Paula Avenue, the place where this jewel of Cuban colonial architecture is located. It is a moderate Baroque style, due to the limitations imposed on architects and builders of the time, using local stone from the Havana area to develop an exuberant imagery in the construction
I was drawn there by its simple exterior structure, which continues to remind me of the disappeared wall of Havana.
But the small church of Paula is not just a memory of stones speaking from the memory of centuries, in which it tells that it was not only a place for spiritual encounter and retreat, but also a hospital to attend to medical needs at the time of its construction. And that after being a center for the study of folk music, today it serves as a conservatory of ancient music.
This is what is written on a dark bronze plaque located on the main façade.
Today, slowly and observantly, I walked around the installation, thinking that it might be a long time before I pass by this place again, and I discovered on the left side a life-size sculpture cast in bronze of a person (historical) who suffered the social injustices of an era during their lifetime.
Apart from the historical and heritage value of the church of Paula, for me today this sculpture is the most interesting thing about this place.
The realistic style of this figure was molded and then cast in bronze by the contemporary sculptor Jose Villa Soberón. It represents Enriwueta Faves, who was tried and deported when her identity as a woman disguised as a man for a long time in order to practice medicine was discovered. Medicine was a profession forbidden to women at the time she lived, and she practiced it in the 19th century in the region of Baracoa.
The sculpture depicts a woman dressed as a man, walking briskly with her doctor's bag in her left hand, perhaps on her way to treat a patient in distress on one of the streets of the eastern city.
This sculpture, located in the church courtyard, breaks with the sacred spirit of the religious center with its simulated movement, giving it a touch of renewal in the field of artistic culture, beyond being the seat of a conservatory of sacred music.
The church of Paula is truly an example of eclecticism in Cuban architecture, where Spanish influences were mixed with other cultures from both Europe and the Middle East.

Me llamó la atención saber que en la habana existen tres centros religiosos que lle:an el mismo nombre o funcionan bajo la advocación del mismo santo. Dos iglesias y una catedral. Los tres bajó el patrocinio de San Francisco de Paula .
Como dato curioso está bien. Pero la unica que realmente conozco y he tocado sus paredes, y de la que en términos religioso puedo dar Fe, es la llamada "Iglesia de paula" en el casco histórico de la ciudad de la Habana
Al recorrer la amplia avenida del puerto desde el mismísimo castillo de la punta al la derecha de la entrada a la bahia, hasta alla sus confines donde los elevados railes del ferrocarril po el que se evacuaba parte de la carga de los barcos que atracaban en el puerto hacia diferentes destinos comerciales nos vamos encontrando con la vida cotidiana de la avenida, muy vinculada al muro que es continuidad del famoso "muro del malecon.".
Con la vistas esplendoroso de la fortaleza de la Cabaña .parte de casablanca, y el atmosférico litoral del poblado de Regla al fondo . Las diferentes estructuras escultoricas haciendo alarde de modernidad y actualidad, llegamos despues de disfrutar del el paseo de madera flotante justo al paseo del acueducto de Albear, mos encontramos con la avenida de Paula, ugar, donde esta enclavada esta joya de la arquitectura colonial cubana .de un Barroco Moderado, por las limitaciones que imponia al los arquitectos y constructores de la época , las piedras de canteria , autoctonas del entorno habanero, para desarrollar un imaginario exhuberante. En la construcción.
Hasta alli llegué atraído por su sencilla estructura exterior que me sigue recordando a la desaparecida muralla de la habana..
Pero la pequeña iglesia de paula no es solo un recuerdo de piedras hablando desde la memoria de los siglos en la que cuenta que fue ademas de lugar para el encuentro espiritual y el recogimiento , hospital para atender las necesidades de atencion medica en la época de su construcción . Y que después de ser centro de estudio de la music folklórica, hoy funge como conservatorio de la música antigua .
Asi reza en una placa de bronce oscuro ubicada en la fachada principal.
Hoy despacio y observador le di la vuelta a la instalación pensando en que puedo demorar vastante tiempo en pasar de nuevo por el lugar, y descubrí en el lateral izquierdo la es escultura a tamaño natural fundida en bronce de una persona ( histórica ) que en vida sufrio los perjuicios sociales de una epoca .
Punto aparte del valor histórico y patrimonial de la iglesia de Paula, oara mi hoy es escultura es lo mas interesante que tiene es lugar .
El estilo realista de esta figura moldeada después fundida en bronce por el escultor contemporaneo Jose Villa Soberón. Representa a Enriwueta Faves, juzgada y deportada al ser descubierta su identidad de mujer disfrazada por mucho tiempo de hombre para poder ejercer la medicina , profesión vedada a las mujeres en la epoca que le toco vivir y que ejerció alla por el siglo XlX en la region de Baracoa.
La escultura reproduce a la mujer vestida de hombre, que avanza a paso rápido, con su maletín de medico en la mano izquierda, quizas para atender a algun paciente en apuros en alguna calle de la la ciudad oriental.
Esta obra escultorica emplazada en el patio de la iglesia rompe xon su movimiento simulado con el espíritu saco del centro religioso le da un toque de renovación en el tiempo en el campo de la cultura.artisrica mas alla de ser la sede de un conservatorio de musica sacra.
La iglesia de paula realmente es un ejemplo de lo ecleptico en la arquitectura cubana donde lo españolizante llegó mezclado con otras culturas tanto europeas como del medio oriente .
