Das Wertachbrucker Tor

The Wertachbrucker Tor in Augsburg is actually not on the Wertach at all, but a few hundred metres away from it.
In the Middle Ages, it was the gate through the medieval city wall.
The original gate was built in 1370, when it was the customs gate of Augusburt.
In 1605, the Augsburg master builder Elias Holl raised and rebuilt the gate.
During the Thirty Years' War, several attacks by the French and Swedes were repelled here.
Napoleon entered the city through this gate in 1805.
Today the gate is used by the carpenters' guild.
Coming from the city centre, you drive down a hill slightly, and you can see it from a distance.
Next to it is a small park with a "Freibank" beer garden. Augsburg's ice stadium is also built there.
To the side, you can still see the old city wall with the narrow path "am Backofenwall".
There is also a somewhat wider road leading to the city centre, and a brewery has set up directly at the intersection. The Torbräu. I have already described a few beers from it at BEERSATURDAY.
This is the other side of the gate.
By the way, one of our old town festivals takes place there every few years. The Wertachbrucker Tor festival. But I don't have any pictures of that at the moment.
Das Wertachbrucker Tor in Augsburg ist eigentlich gar nicht an der Wertach sondern ein paar Hundert Meter davon entfernt.
Im Mittelalter war es das Tor durch die mittelalterliche Stadtmauer.
Das Ursprüngliche Tor wurde 1370. Damals war es das Zolltor von Augusburt.
1605 hat der Augsburger Baumeister Elias Holl, das Tor erhöht und umgebaut.
Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurden hier mehrere Angriffe der Franzosen und Schweden abgewehrt.
Napoleon zog im Jahre 1805 durch dieses Tor in die Stadt ein.
Heute wird das Tor von der Schreinerinnung genutzt.
Wenn man von der Innenstadt kommt, fährt man einen Berg leicht hinab, und kann es schon von der Ferne aus sehen.
Daneben ist ein kleiner Park mit einem Biergarten "Freibank" . Auch das Augsburger Eisstadion ist dort gebaut.
Seitlich kann man noch die alte Stadtmauer erkennen mit dem schmalen Weg "am Backofenwall".
Es geht auch eine etwas breitere Strasse Richtung innenstadt und direkt an der Kreuzung hat sich eine Brauerei angesiedelt. Das Torbräu. Ich habe schon ein paar Biere davon beim BEERSATURDAY beschrieben.

Dort findet übrigens eines unserer Altstadtfeste alle paar Jahre statt. Das Wertachbrucker Tor fest. Aber dazu habe ich gerade keine Bilder.
