Hoy les traigo un lugar que conocí en un viaje que data del 2014.
Después de recorrer casi todo Sudamérica, puedo afirmar que este lugar está entre los más increíbles de los que he estado.
Este escenario que hoy les muestro está ubicado en el noroeste de mi provincia natal, Catamarca en Argentina. En la región de la Puna, en el departamento de Antofagasta de la Sierra.
Se trata del Campo de Piedra Pómez, un área natural protegida que se extiende por 25km de norte a sur y te traslada a otro planeta.

Today I bring you a place that I met on a trip dating back to 2014.
After traveling almost all of South America, I can affirm that this place is among the most incredible of the ones I have been to.
This scenery that I show you today is located in the northwest of my home province, Catamarca in Argentina. In the Puna region, in the department of Antofagasta de la Sierra.
It is the Campo de Piedra Pómez, a protected natural area that stretches 25km from north to south and takes you to another planet.
Para situarlos un poco en el contexto, es importante señalar que Antofagasta de la Sierra está entre las localidades más extensas y menos pobladas de Argentina, a unos 3300 msnm en una zona volcánica.

To put it in context, it is important to point out that Antofagasta de la Sierra is among the largest and least populated towns in Argentina, at an altitude of 3300 meters above sea level in a volcanic area.
La evidencia demuestra que este mar de piedra pómez es el resultado de emisiones volcánicas cercanas hace más de cien mil años y se presume que el clima y los vientos secaron esta lava de manera temprana formando estas crestas y pilares de textura aireada y super liviana.

Evidence shows that this sea of pumice is the result of nearby volcanic emissions over a hundred thousand years ago and it is presumed that climate and winds dried this lava early on forming these airy, super-light textured ridges and pillars.
La piedra pómez es una roca de orígen volcánico que comunmente es utilizada para exfoliar la piel, principalmente los pies.

Llegar hasta allí es toda una aventura, en el camino verás volcanes y atravesaras el desierto. Para esto es necesario contratar un guía, y contar con un vehículo 4x4. Teniendo en cuenta la desolación de la región y la gran amplitud térmica puede significar un gran riesgo hacerlo por tu propia cuenta.

Estar ahí es la experiencia más cercana a llegar a otro planeta. Sencillamente una sensación indescriptible.
Saber que estás pisando un suelo inhabitado que se formó hace decenas de miles de años me hacía pensar que esos pilares fueron testigos de evolución del planeta, que hace tantisimo tiempo observaban el cielo que hoy miramos. Cómo habrá sido en aquel entonces? Qué nos contarían si pudieran hablar? Hay tanto enigma como poros en su superficie.

Knowing that you are stepping on an uninhabited ground that was formed tens of thousands of years ago made me think that those pillars were witnesses of the evolution of the planet, that so long ago they observed the sky that we look at today. What would it have been like back then? What would they tell us if they could talk? There is as much enigma as pores on its surface.
Si algún día llegan a Argentina no se pierdan de este lugar. La difusión de esta zona aún es bastante pobre a pesar de lo obnubilante de la experiencia.

Para llegar, algunos tips:
Primero debes llegar a Catamarca. Desde Buenos Aires puedes hacerlo en avión o en bus.
Una vez llegado a la capital de la provincia, en la terminal de la ciudad debes buscar la agencia "El Antofagateño" y pedir un boleto a Antofagasta de la Sierra. Tiene una frecuencia de dos veces por semana.
En Antofagasta de la Sierra tienes algunas opciones de alojamiento, desde habitaciones en casas de lugareños pasando por algunos hostels y hasta hosterías. Quizás te conviene llegar con algo ya reservado, puedes pedir ayuda en una oficina de Información Turística en la Capital de Catamarca, en misma terminal encuentras una.
En Antofagasta de la Sierra sólo te queda preguntar, y encontrarás un amplio abanico de lugares increíbles para visitar.

To get there, some tips:
First you must get to Catamarca. From Buenos Aires you can do it by plane or bus.
Once you arrive to the capital of the province, in the terminal of the city you should look for the agency "El Antofagateño" and ask for a ticket to Antofagasta de la Sierra. It has a frequency of twice a week.
In Antofagasta de la Sierra you have some lodging options, from rooms in local people's houses to hostels and even inns. You may want to arrive with something already booked, you can ask for help in a Tourist Information office in the Capital of Catamarca, in the same terminal you will find one.
In Antofagasta de la Sierra all you have to do is ask, and you will find a wide range of incredible places to visit.

Hacer todo lo posible por preservar los lugares que aún no han sido intervenidos por el hombre es lo menos que podemos hacer por el planeta como seres humanos.

Do not forget to respect nature. Do not walk on trails that are not marked. Do not leave garbage. Do not feed wildlife. Do not damage the flora. Do not make fires in places that are not intended for that purpose.
Doing everything possible to preserve the places that have not yet been intervened by man is the least we can do for the planet as human beings.
