Bonsall in Derbyshire, UK, is historically known for its lead mining, farming, knitting, and cotton mill industries. I've never been to it before, just driven through it, so we called in today parking up in the village car park. It was free, but donations were welcome, which was a good start to the day. We then walked through the recreation ground to get to the main part of the village.
In the centre, was a Market Cross with its 13 steps which is classed as a Grade II listed building probably dating back to the 17th century or even earlier. Source
One of the few interesting fountains in the village.
There were some cobbled stones leading up to the village store. They are quite common in Derbyshire. They look nice, but in today's climate not great for wheelchair users, baby buggies, or even walking over.
Some of the roads were actually relaid by the German Prisoner's of War in World War II. Source
The inscription reads:
This carving is an exact replica of "t' old man of Bonsall.
The original early medieval carving, the earliest representation of a Derbyshire lead miner, stood for centuries in Bonsall Parish Church during the restoration work in 1864, it was removed for safekeeping.
Eventually, it was moved to Wirksworth Parish Church where it is built into the South Transept. This replica was carved by Graham Barfield of Bole Hill in December 2002.
It looks as though they've just celebrated their village carnival as the bunting was still up and their wells had been dressed. Well Dresssings probably started as a pagan tradition which was later adopted by the Christian Church as a thanks to having a supply of water in the village.Source
I'm not sure why they had boxer shorts flying outside the pub. Perhaps they'd run out of bunting. Whatever, the reason it looked good!
We did notice that there were quite a number of vehicles going through the village. I understand now why they had to put their own makeshift road signs up.
It was a really interesting village with lots of things to see. According to one of the locals there's also been some UFO sightings here! Sadly, we didn't meet ET today.

I love these quaint villages, we have quite a few of them in our part of the world (Somerset) but I haven't seen any that uses boxers as bunting before!!!!
It was a weird one ... 😁

Thank you very much @LivingUKTaiwan and @pinmapple. ❤️
Very nice old village. So many old buildings and old roads are quite well preserved. Time stopped there. Very charming village.
Perhaps that pub requires clients to wear boxer shorts! 🙀😂
Yes, the boxer shorts were a bit odd but it gave me a laugh.
