As I mentioned in my previous post earlier this week, last month we had our usual zoo visit. It's not just a zoo visit as the Somostető, or Platoul Cornesti, the Romanian name of the place is a place for a whole day, offering entertainment and leisure for all age categories. It is the highest point of Marosvásárhely (Targu Mures) and it is offering a view you don't forget easily.
The oak forest that surrounds the zoo offered us the cooling shade you need in a day with 35C temperature.
Covering an impressive 42 hectares, Târgu Mureș Zoo is the largest zoological garden in Romania. It is home to over 800 animals from around 150 local and exotic species. What truly makes it unique is that it is the only zoo in the country that proudly hosts elephants, giraffes, and gibbons in its collection, and the only one that offers visitors the chance to get up close to the animals in special walk-through enclosures.
Tickets are available at the ATMs placed next to the entrance. Adults pay 8€, while kids, students and pensioners have discounted tickets at 3€. It is a reasonable price in my opinion.
The impressive size and offer of the zoo requires a whole day, if you want to enjoy the experience, so we arrived at 11 am I think. It's good time in my opinion, as the zoo opens at 10 am and the animals are not napping yet. It's kind of disappointing to see them sleeping, but we can't be selfish. Heat has an effect on everyone and it's not like they are paid to parade for visitors. Anyway, let's see what I have for you today.
As you can see, they have the necessary space and shade, to live a relatively normal life in captivity.
This space is in front of the building hosting the fish and birds.
Not that I'm an expert in this area and photographing here is always difficult, due to the water, but it's fun to watch these tiny, cute and colorful fish. It's quite a challenge to catch them as most of the move really fast. Kids live them though.
Turtles are always a lot of fun and this guy seemed to feel good in the water. They have turtles in several places, some are next to the water, some in the water, so you always have a few to watch.
Next to the fish, there were two snakes as well, most likely their new home was not ready yet.
This section is a totally renewed one as snakes in the past had a very small box each. Now, with this setup, they most likely have a better life.
And I'm tagging @avdesing here, she knows why.
The truth is, snakes can only be found in the mountain area. Only some of them are poisonous and definitely not the size of what you see in the zoo. This is why these giant ones are so interesting for visitors.
I know very little about turtles, so seeing them eating melon was a surprise. These were way bigger than the previous one and slower as well, but it was so nice watching them eat.
The truth is, the zoo is a perfect place to update your knowledge about animals, or learn a lot actually as there are always new additions. There are regular interactive activities for children as well, which is the best way to learn at that young age.

I saw that albino python and it reminded me of the time, over 15 years ago, when my family and I went to an exhibition and there was one there!!! And my brother put it round his neck , I nearly died!!! I’m not really into snakes, haha, I’ll stick to fish!!! But I want felines!😆
Always enjoy going to zoos. Seem to learn something new every time and see new critters as well. My favorite in the pics you shared are the large tortoises. They are always so neat to watch eat and slowly walk around. We have fairly decent zoo close by, but haven't been to it since moving here. We have talked about going this year. But like there, it has been stupid hot. We are waiting for it to cool down some.
You should definitely visit the zoo and post about it too. Next month it's going to be cooler. I'm planning to take my dad too, but we are also waiting for the weather to cool a little.
Those turtles are funny, we stood there to watch them eat and judging by how they ate, came to the conclusion that they are not very smart 😂
The small ones used to be next to a pool, full of rocks, bigger in size than them and it was so funny watch them move on the rocks.
