The Lake on you right hand and the Dam on your left

Hello, my dear friends, it's time for another post on the #Haveyoubeenhere and pinned on @pinmapple! Although we are still in a state of quarantine in Greece our character will not break! I can't wait for this to be over and enjoy my time exploring Greece and the rest of the world!

Today i will take you with me on a journey a little bit outside of Athens, in Lake Marathon. While looking at the photos we should learn a little bit more about its history and ofc how to get there! Let's begin, shall we?

History of Lake Marathon

To begin with, the Lake Marathon is an artificial lake created in order to gather water for the purpose of supplying Athens with it. So as you understand the creation of the lake was a big thing for Athens and still is.

In order to do so, they created a dam and build it at the spot where 2 rivers meet each other. The dam was built-in 1926-1929 and considered to be an example of technological advancement for Greece. Imagine that when it was built it was considered to be the best across the Balkan states!

Now let's head over to the lake once again. Marathon lake was the number 1 water supplier for Athens from 1931 to 1959. The population in Athens since then has increased so much that lake Marathon nowadays could only cover the water expenses for a few days!

Info About The Lake

So the lake is about 2450 acres long and 54 meters deep. The highest point of the dam is 227 meters above the water so it's pretty amazing if you ask me to just witness and watch it. Below you can see a google map screenshot that indicates the distance from the center of Athens

By car, it takes around 50 minutes to an hour to get there or you can use a motorbike. There are no busses or trains that can take you there though. For us living in Athens, it is day trip that we accompany with lots of food!

There aren't many things to do there, so you will probably spend around an hour or so in the Lake. It used to have an awesome cafeteria with a view over the lake but because there is nothing else to do there, it sadly closed down!

The cafeteria after closed down

Below is the actual view you can see from the cafeteria. What an awesome spot they had and how sad that it closed down. They should have organized day trips for schools or old people there, had busses taken them to the cafeteria and even a guide or something!

I still remember how awesome it felt watching the lake and the dam from that position. It's fascinating what we humans can create and i wondered about how many animals will live there! That artificial lake, now that is not used by us, had probably created a brand new ecosystem!

So what do you guys think? Do you like it?

Do you have any questions about the lake?

All the images have been taken by me, so i got the exclusive rights and i am awesome!
