Let's travel together #335 - Mănăstirea Nămăești (Nămăești Monastery)

Today's post comes as a continuation of my latest Romanian trip and you will shortly understand why.

As I previously mentioned, I was born in a family full of faith and more or less this thing was written down in my DNA although I am not a person who goes to monastery too often. However, Romania is proud amongst many other things, to also have some really unique monasteries which are slowly turning into tourist attractions being visited by people from all over the globe.

Along with their unique look, history and legends, there is this famous place in Câmpulung known as “Triunghiul Mănăstirilor Rupestre” or "The Triangle of the Cave Monasteries".

When you hear "cave monasteries" I bet things sound already interesting enough, but the truth is that all three monasteries have been placed strategically in this region being said that they even create a unique and very powerful energy that can be felt by those who visit all three religious places.

As you can guess, my family and I did visit them during our stay and the previous post represents the first such location, being completed by today's post and an upcoming one that who knows when it will be posted.

Even if all three monasteries have in common their structure, which is basically raised inside a cave, the 2nd cave we visited wasn't as hard to reach as the first one, where we had a full hike on the way there.

Nămăești Monastery is actually, the most modern one out of the three, speaking about a full schedule dedicated to prayers and people attending the church services which makes it a bit hard to visit it as a tourist other than from the outside.

Anyway, I really loved the short walk to the monastery as it was full of flowers and nature, and the scenery was completed by the houses of the locals who were living at the bottom of the hill.

Although religion and politics should never be discussed just because they can be controversial and make some people feel uncomfortable, it's a different thing when it comes to travelling to religious locations. In fact, over here you won't meet (in most cases) all the random categories of people that are met in other circumstances because anyone making its way to a church has something in common with the others, which is "faith" - no matter whether their God is the same with yours or not.

Nămăești Monastery is located in the village that is known for its historical marks found over the years, the church being placed inside a stone but without being known who raised it or since when it dates.
It was first found in 1547 and there are more legends reminding about this place also being considered as representing a Christian catacomb used in the Roman Age.
However, the most famous legend is that of three shepherds who spent the night in this place without paying too much attention to the surroundings and only found out how powerful the monastery is when the next morning they all had the same dream, that was leading to some religious icon placed inside the church and which had the power to make any wish come true.
More than that, the same dream was repeated the next night as well, being followed to meet the Lord's Mother herself on the 3rd night.

While the legend has been kept alive over the years because of the locals and everyone visiting this place more times per year, the real interesting part is that this icon exists and it's stored safely inside the church which is believed to be one of the 12 painted by Saint Luke.

Sadly, we weren't able to enter the church and see the painting with our own eyes because we visited the place during some local holidays and there were a lot more tourists and locals attending the church services than usual so we should have waited at least two hours before making it inside.

As we were on the way back home and had in plan to visit the 3rd monastery leading to the spiritual triangle I mentioned to you before, we decided to only take one last walk around and admire the architecture, surroundings and even landscape from over the hills and call ourselves grateful for being able to reach this location as well.

Nămăești Monastery is located in Nămăești village and can be reached from Bucharest to Câmpulung Muscel following the next route DN71 - DN72A - DC19. Entering the monastery is free of charge but it will still lead to waiting in queue more or less depending on when you are visiting it.
