Hello, Hivers! In today's post I will tell you about Sokol Monastery, located near the town of Gabrovo, North Central Bulgaria.
To get to Sokol Monastery you need to catch the road to Etara Ethnographic Complex. The road passes next to the ethnographic complex and continues to the monastery. After a short climb we reached the Sokol Monastery. The surprising thing was that we started from the center of Gabrovo at 14 degrees above zero. Once we got to the monastery, the air temperature dropped sharply and reached 0.

За да стигнете до Соколския манастир трябва да хванете пътя за етнографски комплекс Етъра. Пътят минава в непосредствена близост до етнографския комплекс и продължава към манастира. След кратко изкачване стигнахме до Соколския манастир. Изненадващото беше, че тръгнахме от центъра на Габрово на 14 градуса над нулата. След като се качихме при манастира, температурата на въздуха рязко намаля и стигна 0.
At the entrance of the monastery we were greeted by a very smiling woman selling souvenirs. She told us a bit about the history of the monastery.

In 1832 arch. Joseph Sokolski built a wooden church with an altar apse in the rock of the falcon. The present temple was built in 1834 in three months. And on 15.08.1834 it was consecrated by the Bishop of Tarnovo Hilarion.
The frescoes in it are the work of Pope Paul and his son Nikolai, who are natives of the village of Shipka. The iconostasis was replaced with a new one in 1862.

Стенописите в него са дело на поп Павел и сина му Николай, които са родом от село Шипка. Иконостасът е заменен с нов през 1862 година.
In 1836 arch. Sokolski founded a school in the monastery where Neofit Bozveli taught. In 1850, near the central temple, Abbot Joseph built a small church-vault, which Felix Kanitz wrote admiringly in his notes that it was the work of an Italian master.

The construction genius Kolyo Ficheto. He built for free a beautiful fountain in memory of the captured and hanged 8 rebels. In the memorable year of 1876 the monastery was the meeting point of the Gabrovo insurgents, who on May 1 took an oath in the temple and set off to the Balkan, led by the warlord Tsanko Dyustabanov, whose sabre is kept in the monastery. During the Russo-Turkish Liberation War, a military hospital was established in the monastery.

An interesting little church. The whole area has an almost Swiss-like feel to it. I think it's the gentle arches and light colors.
I was going to stop in Sofia on my last travels, but it didn't work out. I feel that I must get to Bulgaria at some point, though. There is so much history and much to see.
