The beach and Pier
The beach of Prachuap Khiri Khan is very long. There are 2 Bays on one side and one on the other of the curve (that’s where that military camp from my last post is). The first two beaches aren’t used at all though or so it seemed. They reminded me a lot of the beaches near Karachi in Pakistan with how they were - long beachline of wet sand and elevated cemented walking area above them.
In the middle of one of the bays there is a long Pier that anyone can walk on. We decided to do it in the middle of the day as “smart people” often do. Needless to say there isn’t any shade to hide and it is a long ass pier. We managed to take some nice photos and videos though so all was good there.
These little fellows weren't afraid of the heat and were chilling on the side. Pretty sure they had a dip in the water to cool down before they stood there in the sun though, unlike us.
This was the only place with a little bit of shade. Nat for some reason kept her mask on even though it was extremely hot and we were the only crazy people on the pier in this heat.
Pillar Shrine
This temple was right next to where we were staying. Our hotel was in a small street between 2 of the bigger boulevards and the Temple was right next to it.
It’s hard to miss this Temple. The surroundings are pretty nicely taken care of. The little garden is super nice and the colors and ornaments of the structures are incredible and quite unique. It is also lit at night.
I wanted to come here early in the morning, but we stayed up late the previous night, playing Mario Kart on the Nintendo. Still managed to get up around 10ish, but by the time we got ready and left it was close to 11 already.
In the garden the bushes were cut into the forms of different animals - monkeys, birds, cats and all sorts. They were spread all around the shrine.
The four gates of the shrine were all the same. This one seemed a bit more worn off but the main one that was currently opened was bright red and looked amazing when closed later in the evening. Unfortunately don't have a good photo of that.
Inside the shrine you can find the big golden statue of buddha and the bright red door I was talking about.
Night Weekend Market
On Friday and Saturday a huge market is constructed right next to the beach. Our American friend had been here before though and was sure the market was on the streets of the city. We spent a good hour or more walking around asking locals where the market is and all of them pointed us towards the beach. Our friend was pretty stubborn and kept looking where he remembered it to be. We finally came to the place he said it was and when we asked the people there, they said it was moved to the beach alley.
The town isn’t that big so we quickly got to the right place. The whole street is closed for 2 days in order for this market to be there. It is massive and you can find pretty much any food you’d think of. There were Burger shops, pastries, lots of traditional Thai food, sushi, fresh veggies and fruits and many more.
Ofcourse a Thai market won't be the same without some fried bugs. Always thought these were for the tourists but locals really eat them. The tourist ones are only on the main walking street in Bangkok where they fry cockroaches.. that noone but the drunk white dudes eat.
I was craving either crepes or the Thai desert - Roti. Couldn't find any roti but managed to see a lady making crepes and had some nice dessert!
The place was pretty packed with people. Prices were quite cheap as any other outdoor market in Thailand. Given there are no tourists and the place is pretty quiet even without covid - locals didn’t bump their prices much.
There were a few singers around. Even a mom and her little son were having their own gig near one of the ends of the Market.
This lady had her own marketing station right in the middle of the park. The kid infront of her wasn't hers but a random kid that decided to join her and dance for a good while.(at least until we moved on from here).
This was great and it is so true about Thailand!! The popular places are good, but, the road less traveled works for me!
Wonderful post!
