Budapest. A non touristic walk.

in Worldmappinlast month

buda1.jpeg

A famous landmark across the Danube, it is one of the bridges that links Buda with Pest. That's it for touristic stuff.

So a walk from the mooring to see what I was told would be a half decent graveyard. So let us walk and take in the Budapest Ghetto area of the city, steeped in history.

Random Stuff

buda3.jpeg

Budapest in days before WW2 was home to nearly a quarter million jews living and working in the 7th District as it was known. Persecuted during the early years of the war, by their own Hungarian leaders, simply to protect their own necks from the Nazi regime.

buda2.jpeg

The ghetto was created in 1944 once the city was occupied by German forces. encircling and cutting of the community from the outside world, many were sent off to concentration camps, many who were left died on the streets, disease, starvation, hypothermia the killers.

buda10.jpeg

56 days just 56 days after the occupation just under half a million jews were deported from Hungary to the death camps.

buda11.jpeg

In addition, in Budapest alone 10,000 jews were murdered by the Hungarian right wing militia, the Arrow Cross party many were shot by the banks of the Danube river so they fell and were washed away.

buda12.jpeg

Post WW2 left a scar was left on the district it fell into disrepair and many homes were abandoned, it was only in the early 2000s that the landscape of the neighbourhood changed.

buda19.jpeg

Cheap rent, and cheap beer turned around the fortunes of the district making it a party place bringing in youths from far and wide. It also brought in gentrifying of the streets.

buda28.jpeg

buda18.jpeg

Now the area is a blend of old and new, from what I saw mostly old facades, which is great, maybe they hide the new?

"Nosztalgia Régiségek, Ritkaságok boltja" (Nostalgia Antiques, Rarities shop)

buda4.jpeg

The Hallo Bar, what more could any man want? A striptease bar next to a pizza hut. "striptease bar" how very quaint and 70's (£44 for a private dance.....so I am informed)

Judit Hat Salon

A family run business in existence since 1987.

"Pajtás Bicycle Shop"

Busy since the year 2000

buda7.jpeg

This small statue depicting a diver sitting on a bollard. It is one of the many "Little Statues of Budapest" created by Mihály Kolodko. They are scattered around the city and often placed in unexpected locations, so unexpected that I didn't find another one.

Simple gorgeousness of mural
At first my heart skipped a beat, well several probably, believing I had stumbled across a host of Soviet inspired murals, but these pre date WW2, when Hungary was actually aligned with Germany.
Whatever, still full of gorgeousness.

"Radium therapy,"

Created by Hungarian sculptor Tibor Vilt in 1938, it is located on the wall of the National Institute of Oncology (formerly the Radium Department of the State Hospital).

It depicts the application of radium therapy, a medical treatment used in the early 20th century for cancer treatment

The Millers

Just up the road, a magnificent set of stone reliefs on the walls of the offices of the Budapest Workers Insurance Fund,

They depict various hazards to workers' health, serving as a visual reminder of health and safety.

"Accident on construction works"

"Death of the Miner"

A touching scene of grief surrounding the death of a miner.

Carl Lutz Memorial a bronze sculpture, created in 1991, commemorates Carl Lutz, a Swiss diplomat who served in Budapest during World War II.

He is credited with saving many thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust risking his own life by issuing "protective documents" and placing buildings under Swiss diplomatic protection.

There is so much to see. Random walks can be fun most times.

I totally agree with you. Saving a life is almost equivalent to saving an entire world.

Obviously, there are many travelers in Budapest but probably less overcrowded than Prague and less polished/repaired?

I keep this city in my mind as the top destination in Eastern Europe. Wanna have a flight there one day...

As I see in your pictures, shabbiness and dereliction are still available in Budapest - that makes me happy as a traveler. Many things remind about the Socialist past - that's cool too. Love the set.

...jews were murdered...

Terrible pages of history... 😟

Cheers @x-rain yeah fantastic decay, it would be quite a change/culture shock after being in SE Asia so long, how is the sub continent? not seen you upload for awhile?

Hey. I actually got bored with SEA and wanted this change so I was quite content by that (this is the second time in Kathmandu so I knew what to expect). There were reasons why I decided to go to Kathmandu despite the monsoon season but now after 1.5 months I feel quite exhausted - it's just dull gray sky all the way - the most boring light - just darkish greyish (no fogs, even downpours are rare). so, long story short, it's quite depressing - waiting for sunny days, go to sleep at 6-7 am and stuff. lack of images.

I get it, I enjoyed nepal more when out of the city, the countryside seemed a different world, as you say it must be depressing all that greyness after such vibrance and colour from SEA. Are you staying for long?

I mean, almost no sunny days - the sky has been overcast all the time.

In about a month, I'll go to India (for the third time) - for 6 months. I think I'll stay in Kolkata for long - 2-3 months or so (if I find an affordable room with access to a kitchen). Let's see.

Previously, I visited Varanasi and Kolkata and want to re-visit both. Not quite sure I want something new. Ayodhya maybe... Other plans for India... Not sure, let's see.

I must be honest I love India, hope it is more homely to you than where you are now

I really enjoyed your post! Your perspective on lesser-known neighborhoods is very different and valuable. The photos also convey the feeling of the space being alive very well. Thank you for sharing

Cheers @azamsohrabi , always appreciate your positive comments. Must be hones, give me the back streets every time instead of the tourist stuff they want you to see.

You are very welcome @grindle! it was well deserved. ☀️
We are already looking forward to reading more about your adventures!

Such a horrific and sad story... I still wonder how people could do something so cruel. My heart literally crushes every time i hear about Budapest in WW2 stories. I was in Budapest and saw that shoes monument 😢.
However, that bridge still looks majestic, such an incredible colour, and so many details with beautiful style.
Those small statues look so awesome, they really add the vibe. I enjoy it so much when a city has such cute surprises. The wall with that carved picture is also such a nice work.
But that bronze sculpture in the name of Carl Lutz really warms my soul!

Cheers @darine.darine , yes I remember your trip through Budapest with ya mum and Sis. Hope it brought bakc good memories x

Haha, you have a great memory!

Thank you LOL, some things I remember some I don't

Informative and obviously beautiful. Damn.. I was lost on those buildings.

Hey @grindle!

WW2 History specially with Jews is tragic

I don't know. Neighborhood may never be as it used to be earlier.
Some scars are permanent

Thank you for sharing.
Here is a !PIZZA for you 🍕

Cheers @sagarkothari88 thanks for dropping in, glad you enjoyed my little wander through history.

I visited Budapest years ago, and I remember thinking this was a city with a lot of character. Looking through your photos, and it seems both familiar and new. There are so many little quirky designs and statues around, it really makes a feast for the eyes. I thought the eagles on top of the bridge were a nice touch, very practical to scare away other birds, probably why it seems to be free of any droppings. It is cool how they live amongst memories of their dark past, I remember visiting a bar there that was a partial ruin from a previous war. It did not know the details of what happened during WWII, I appreciate your sharing, as it gives a fuller picture of the place.

Cheers @giathebao thanks for dropping in, I appreciate your positive vibes, hope my little wander brought back some good memories for you
