But first some made in china tat.

In a remote location in the Girdimanchai River Gorge, Lahic is one of the oldest settlements in Azerbaijan and has been a centre renowned for its master craftsmen for over 500 years

There were many artisans who plied their trade here, weavers, carpet makers, jewellers and leather workers, now lost over the centuries what remains is the metal worker, the copper smith and the blacksmith.

A stop on the ancient Silk Route Lahic was renowned for its mastery in weapons, the skills it is said were learned in Iran, where Lahic’s families have their roots.

Many of the town's buildings stuck in time, resembling ancient traditional dwellings, the roads made of heavy cobbles, worn smooth and uneven due to centuries of use. camels, horses carts and now cars.

Modernity has arrived with satellite dishes pointing in the general direction of Russia

An open door, an invitation to see master craftsmen at work

One man gently tapping with time worn tools

Whilst another uses a modern engraver to chase out the pattern in the painted plate.

Now I guess mostly dependant upon the tourist trade for income; tourism took off in Lahic in the 1980's when, still part of the USSR, as a means to revive a failing artisanal sector in the economy the government established a cultural and heritage sector in and a round the village.

A little darker, a lot dustier the blacksmith goes about his business.

Well i think the influx into his smithy awoke him from his slumber

He set about stoking the fires and whilst we waited

and waited

I took great pleasure from wandering around his workplace the variety of old bits and bobs. There for effect? or genuine articles? we have all I am sure seen supposed antiques weather worn and made yesterday!!

Uncle Joe, recognisable anywhere

A rusty old propane gas tank fuelling the fire

Interesting to see hands at work devoid of gloves yet devoid of burn marks and no missing fingers!
Lahic to me was a sleepy, charming little village, a model village set up for visitors?

What a beautiful village Lahic, which despite the fact that it opened its doors to tourism so many years ago and has retained all that antiquity, style and above all craftsmanship. Well said, it is impressive to see the craftsmen working without gloves but without wounds, true masters of the art and those pieces of blacksmithing although dusty are beautiful.
The streets speak of antiquity and history and those hand carved dishes speak of pure art. What a beauty what you have brought us, I really enjoyed your publication and especially the details of the photographs that made me travel in time and space. Thank you for that. Hugs!

An interesting place i love how the old craftsmanship is still alive in Lahic..
Often, the history of towns is not told in stories; the works of their people speak for themselves.
This is an example of that. When you look at the hands of the artisans, you realize the time and love that flows from the hands of those who have made their town a sacred temple.
The cobbled streets, the way the houses are located, and the works made by their artisans speak to you of time, traditions, and the love that their artisans and inhabitants feel for their place. Thank you for sharing. Have a great weekend. Cheers and best regards.

This traditional village made of rocks it's amazing it's the kind of place that I like to visit and are amazing also the photos you made to the local artisans!!💖
Fascinating village @grindle! The intricately painted/ engraved plates are beautiful, for sure very skillful and painstaking work!
Lahic must be full of artisan who were the only remaining of the generation or who tries to pass it down to their successors. Many fine produces in different countries are made by rare artisan with their own hands who mastered how to do it perfectly, which only them knows. Those artisans feels majestic to interact, they carry the art within them and years of tending to their skills. Aside from Lahic, Japan also homes great artisans from jewelries artisans to cars. My favorite is that one woman of a brush company who puts bristles individually in her own hands in a hidden room separate from others, a rare person who knows how to make the finest brush in the history. Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed this one❤️
