Exploring the Beach at Coombe Martin

Coombe Martin is a village on the north coast of Devon. It's on the edge of Exmoor, with stunning scenery and countryside all around. I've been lucky to have visited there a few times over the last year, I may even move there soon!

I most recently visited a couple of weeks ago, it was cold and had been raining, but that was a bonus as the beach was almost deserted.

Although Coombe Martin is called a village, it's known as having one of the longest streets in England, its High Street is a narrow road slowly descending 2 miles down the valley to the beach at the base. It feels never-ending as you drive through but the bay and beaches at the end are worth the trip. Although it's near traditional seaside resorts like Ilfracombe it's managed to retain a local feel, which makes it feel more real.

There's a couple of traditional pubs on the journey down through the village, including the Pack O' Cards which is worth a visit for their lovely traditional ales and local cider! It's just a shame that this time it was closed, post Covid though I'll be back!

The beach itself is wonderful, especially at low tide. It stretches out for a long distance, with a walkway going out into the rocks, with plenty of rock pools, caves, and climbing opportunities. It really does feel like at one point it was a smugglers paradise, with occasional little caves to hide your stash!

When the tide is out you can walk around the headland to another beach called Newberry Beach, which is lovely and secluded, and well worth exploring.

There's lots more to explore in the area, next time I visit I'm planning to explore Broadsands Beach around the corner, which has favorably been compared to beaches in Thailand. Until then, here are some pictures from Coombe Martin...
