Last weekend we decided to go camping with our family again. The place chosen was Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. We got the last camping spot. It is our first summer with a tent since we wanted to be more economical in our summer adventures. The last time in Wasa, in BC, was good and finally, I convinced my wife to go camping. So we tried to find a campground where we could go, but it was tough, many places were totally fully booked up to the end of Summer. I got the last spot in this park, probably between Friday and Sunday, the last spot there for the whole season! So probably it was a person that canceled and I was lucky to find it. For a while, I wanted to go to this park since it is considered the most sacred place for the Blackfoot people, local arborigenous people from Southern Alberta and Montana. In this place, the great stars are the big rock hills with petroglyphs that were drawn by the backfoot people some of which date around 4,000 years ago. It is considered a UNESCO-protected site.
No último fim de semana, decidimos novamente fazer um acampamento com nossa família. O local escolhido foi o Parque Provincial Writing-on-Stone. Conseguimos o último local de acampamento. Este é o nosso primeiro verão com uma barraca, já que queríamos ser mais econômicos em nossas aventuras de verão. A última vez em Wasa, na Colúmbia Britânica, foi boa e finalmente convenci minha esposa a acampar. Então tentamos encontrar um acampamento para onde pudéssemos ir, mas foi difícil, muitos lugares estavam totalmente reservados até o final do verão. Eu consegui o último lugar neste parque, provavelmente entre sexta-feira e domingo, o último lugar lá para toda a temporada! Então, provavelmente foi uma pessoa que cancelou e tive a sorte de encontrá-lo. Há um tempo que queria ir a este parque, já que é considerado o lugar mais sagrado para o povo Blackfoot, os povos aborígenes locais do sul de Alberta e Montana. Neste local, as grandes estrelas são as colinas de pedra com petroglifos desenhados pelo povo Blackfoot, alguns datados de cerca de 4.000 anos atrás. É considerado um local protegido pela UNESCO.
The park isn't so far from Lethbridge, our home, about 1 hour and a half drive until reaching the city of Milk River ( the closest city to the park, named because there is a river called Milk River) and driving 25 minutes more. The check-in was a bit late at 4 PM so we left after lunch. We had lunch in our favorite place to eat Sushi in our town, called Dono Sushi. They have great lunch deals, then I filled my gas tank at Costco, and amazed me that the price there was one cent more expensive than the gas station near home. The travel goes South and the park is pretty close to the Montana /US border, which you can cross through the cities of Coutts or Aden in this region.
O parque não está tão longe de Lethbridge, nossa casa, cerca de 1 hora e meia de carro até chegar à cidade de Milk River (a cidade mais próxima do parque, assim nomeada por causa de um rio chamado Milk River), e mais 25 minutos de condução. O check-in estava um pouco atrasado, às 16h, então saímos após o almoço. Almoçamos em nosso lugar favorito para comer sushi em nossa cidade, chamado Dono Sushi. Eles têm ótimas ofertas de almoço. Depois, enchi meu tanque de gasolina na Costco, e fiquei surpreso que o preço lá estava um centavo mais caro do que o posto de gasolina perto de casa. A viagem segue para o sul e o parque fica bem perto da fronteira com Montana, nos EUA, que você pode atravessar pelas cidades de Coutts ou Aden nessa região.
Arriving there, we got a nice spot. The park is located in the middle of the prairies, which means usually very low vegetation, mostly grassy type, so usually, there isn't a large number of trees, however, the camping is near the Milk River, not the city, a sandy beach there. And our camping spot was also nice with a good amount of trees. At 4 PM I still had a good amount of sun, so I mostly assembled our tent and also the screen to protect the table and benches from bugs where we would eat and cook, especially from the yellow jacket wasps that get pretty nasty at the end of the summer here. I think everything was assembled in a couple of hours, so we cooked our supper, which was sausages lol. One thing interesting in this park is that they have different educational activities all day and there was a "bat walk" at 8 PM. I went there with my oldest daughter, and my wife stayed with the youngest in the tent (my wife doesn't enjoy bats and also it was getting late for the toddler). It was a nice experience, the guide from the park talked to and showed bat figures and skeletons to the people, for around 1h. She was waiting for the sunset to start the walk. When the sun started to set, She distributed devices that could detect the ultrasound scream from the bats, one of them was simpler just making the ultrasound to be heard by us, and the other one was fancier and would even detect the bat species. It was amazing We started to see the animals flying all around, there were lots of them there, and we were walking through the campground area. The park has 8 different species of insectivore bats. So they are good at eating all the bugs. When we used to live in Brazil, I saw some that just entered our apartment by mistake and those were mostly fruit eaters, but like one guy said, impossible to have fruit eaters in Canada since there isn't almost any fruit around lol.
Ao chegar lá, conseguimos um ótimo local. O parque está localizado no meio das pradarias, o que significa vegetação geralmente baixa, principalmente do tipo gramíneo, então geralmente não há muitas árvores, no entanto, o acampamento fica perto do Rio Milk, não da cidade, há uma praia de areia lá. E nosso local de acampamento também era agradável, com uma boa quantidade de árvores. Às 16h, ainda havia uma boa quantidade de sol, então montei principalmente nossa barraca e também a tela para proteger a mesa e os bancos dos insetos onde comeríamos e cozinharíamos, especialmente das vespas "yellow jacket", que ficam bem irritantes no final do verão aqui. Acredito que tudo tenha sido montado em algumas horas, então fizemos nosso jantar, que foram salsichas, risos. Uma coisa interessante neste parque é que eles têm diferentes atividades educativas durante todo o dia, e houve uma "caminhada com morcegos" às 20h. Fui lá com minha filha mais velha, e minha esposa ficou com a mais nova na barraca (minha esposa não gosta de morcegos e também já estava ficando tarde para a criança pequena). Foi uma experiência agradável, o guia do parque conversou e mostrou figuras e esqueletos de morcegos para as pessoas, por cerca de 1 hora. Ela estava esperando o pôr do sol para iniciar a caminhada. Quando o sol começou a se pôr, ela distribuiu dispositivos que poderiam detectar os gritos de ultrassom dos morcegos, um deles era mais simples, apenas fazendo o ultrassom ser ouvido por nós, e o outro era mais sofisticado e até detectaria a espécie do morcego. Foi incrível! Começamos a ver os animais voando por toda parte, havia muitos deles lá, e estávamos caminhando pela área do acampamento. O parque tem 8 espécies diferentes de morcegos insetívoros. Então, eles são bons em comer todos os insetos. Quando costumávamos morar no Brasil, vi alguns que entravam em nosso apartamento por engano e esses eram principalmente comedores de frutas, mas como alguém disse, impossível ter comedores de frutas no Canadá, já que quase não há frutas por aqui, risos.
On Saturday after eating some scrambled eggs and bread, we went to the Milk River beach, The water is pretty cold however the beach doesn't have any shade! So we must use lots of sunscreens there. Me and my oldest were the only ones to take some real water immersion in there. We came back to our camping spot to eat lunch. At 1h30, I and my oldest daughter went on a tour called "Living Landscape". The price per adult is $21 and for children up to $8. The tour includes bus transportation up to the restricted/protected area in the park where the big rock hills are and the guide. The guide also provided us with some shades to protect us from the sun. This tour lasted 1h30 of easy walking going through some stone steps. There are some other tours, some of them with more moderate or hard trails. The price was pretty reasonable because it is also used for the protection and restoration of the place. We stopped by petroglyphs, images drawn by the Blackfoot people in the stone, and the guide explained a lot about them, such as why some animals are bigger than people, such as beavers. And sometimes people are much bigger than other people. Depending of the importance of this figure to the artist gives the dimension of the figure. Also how to differentiate men (v-shaped neck) from women (u-shaped neck). In addition, why only some living beings had eyes. They believe that adding eyes to figures could trap these beings to the rocks, and only powerful beings can't be trapped, such as sacred beings (people and animals) and deities. Another nice thing is that horses were re-introduced in North America only 300 years ago, so figures with horses are younger figures. The guide also told us some legends from the Blackfoot people
No sábado, depois de comer alguns ovos mexidos e pão, fomos para a praia do Rio Milk. A água é bem fria, no entanto, a praia não tem nenhuma sombra! Então, tivemos que usar bastante protetor solar lá. Eu e minha filha mais velha fomos os únicos a realmente nos imergirmos na água. Voltamos para o nosso local de acampamento para almoçar. O passeio inclui transporte de ônibus até a área restrita/protegida do parque, onde estão as grandes colinas de pedra, e o guia. O guia também nos forneceu alguns guarda-sóis para nos proteger do sol. Esse passeio durou 1h30 de caminhada fácil passando por alguns degraus de pedra. Há outros passeios, alguns deles com trilhas moderadas ou difíceis. O preço era bem razoável, pois também é usado para a proteção e restauração do local. Paramos junto aos petroglifos, imagens desenhadas pelo povo Blackfoot na pedra, e o guia explicou muito sobre eles, como por que alguns animais são maiores que pessoas, como castores. E às vezes pessoas são muito maiores que outras pessoas. Dependendo da importância desta figura para o artista, isso dá a dimensão da figura. Também como diferenciar homens (pescoço em forma de V) de mulheres (pescoço em forma de U). Além disso, por que apenas alguns seres vivos tinham olhos. Eles acreditam que adicionar olhos às figuras poderia prender esses seres nas rochas, e apenas seres poderosos não podem ser presos, como seres sagrados (pessoas e animais) e deidades. Outra coisa interessante é que os cavalos foram reintroduzidos na América do Norte há apenas 300 anos, então figuras com cavalos são mais recentes. O guia também nos contou algumas lendas do povo Blackfoot.
We came back to our camping spot, went again to the river, and had supper (hamburgers). After that, we went to a theatre about the conservation of the local snakes, which includes the prairie rattlesnake and bull snake (a constrictor snake). The theatre was fun for the kids, a little bit complex for my youngest one, but still fun. We also lightened the firepit to eat some smores. Sunday was the day to pack up everything and we had time to visit the trail that connects the campground and the visitor center which includes weird rock forms in sandy soil. Since we had a big ocean in that place in early times, there was a great amount of sand there. After this short walk and pictures, we went back home with a short stop to have lunch.
Voltamos para o nosso local de acampamento, fomos novamente para o rio e jantamos (hambúrgueres). Depois disso, fomos a um teatro sobre a conservação das cobras locais, que incluem a cascavel das pradarias e a cobra touro (uma cobra constritora). O teatro foi divertido para as crianças, um pouco complexo para a mais nova, mas ainda assim divertido. Também acendemos a fogueira para fazer smores. Domingo foi o dia de desmontar tudo, e tivemos tempo para visitar a trilha que conecta o acampamento e o centro de visitantes, que inclui formas rochosas estranhas em solo arenoso. Como havia um grande oceano naquele local em tempos antigos, havia uma grande quantidade de areia lá. Após essa curta caminhada e tirar fotos, voltamos para casa com uma breve parada para almoçar.

Acampar deve ser muito legal. Aqui no Brasil não tenho coragem para fazer isso e não existe a estrutura que esses parques tem por ai.

I think some of the place you went are very historical just like stones written with many kinds of drawings. Petroglyphs is one of writing methods back in a stone age eras.
