This is the seventh post of the Manali Leh Highway series, in the previous posts of this series you have seen Himalayan Shepherds, Life of Changpa Tribe, Himalayan Rickshaw Run, landscapes of Lahaul Valley and Maure Plains and learned about this colorful land. Today in this series we will read about Tanglang La mountain pass.
Tanglang La, located on the Manali-Leh Highway, is said to be the second highest mountain pass in the world. The height of this pass is 5319 meters (17446 feet). This is the last pass while going from Manali to Leh and it is the first pass while coming from Leh to Manali. If the weather is clear at Tanglang La, we can see the mountains standing above 7000 meters in the womb of the Siachen Glacier, in which K2 is the most famous mountain peak in Pakistan, which has the title of the second highest mountain peak in the world.
I went to this pass for the first time in 2014, then I went here by bicycle. The approach to this pass starts from Maure Plains. I still remember that it was snowing here with a strong storm, the gear of my cycle got stuck from above, due to which I had to get down from the cycle and walk. My body heat was getting lost in the falling temperature and there came a time when I sat on the roadside and started thinking why I came here? After about half an hour I took out the chocolate from the bag and ate it, after which I got some energy, then I started walking again and reached Tanglang La Pass.
There is an all-religion temple at Tanglang Pass, Buddhist prayer flags are placed all around and there is a white colored Buddhist stupa. When the weather is clear, the local people set up a small tent here, in that tent they earn their living by selling food and drink to the tourists. Standing on the top and looking back, the Maure Plains looks like a very beautiful valley. Can't believe that I have reached so far by cycling from here.
After 2014, I must have crossed this pass about 22 times. Sometimes by crossing by bicycle, sometimes on foot, sometimes by car, and sometimes by bus, I have also set many records for myself. This place is very famous among the tourists, motorcycle lovers stop here and get many photos clicked.
Every time I have stepped into this place, I have felt as if I have been transported here by a spaceship. Here strong wind, low oxygen, thin air, snow-capped mountains and the colors of all the mountains are so spectacular that you are compelled to come here again and again. A high peak of the Karakoram range visible from here, named Saser Kangri, is a rare sight. The height of this peak is 7672 meters. By the way, 42 mountain peaks are visible from here, and believe me, it is very difficult for everyone to get a chance to see this view.
So in this post I am keeping the photos of Tanglang La pass in front of you, I hope you will like this place like Mars.
