Glasgow Necropolis - the city of the dead !

in Pinmapplelast year

While in Glasgow last week, we took a visit to the Necropolis (thats whats its actually named).

The burial ground opened in the 1830s, and has some pretty fantastic tombs.

It is thought that there are tens of thousands of people buried there, but not everyone could afford a grave stone/marker, so less than 10% actually have some kind of memorial.

There was clearly some kind of race to build the biggest memorial among the more well to do, with 3 of the biggest in the pic above. The statue of the column won the race as it sits on the highest point in the Necropolis and is also the tallest monument.

Some of the tombs are pretty incredible - the one above is probably my favourite. It looks like its built of red sandstone, which is quite soft and hence it is suffering from erosion due to our lovely Scottish weather.

Some of the tombs are quite large and contain vaults for better words like the main one above, which seemed to be a communal resting place for merchants.

The small section above is actually a special Jewish enclosure. I love the styling and markings on the gravestones in this section.

I also really liked the two tombs above. The one on the right has coloured glass in the cupola at the top.

And the pic above shows the view inside and you can just about see the effects of the coloured glass shinning into the tomb - quite nice indeed.

My wife was trying out some arty black and white pics - which work pretty well in a graveyard !

The ivy was doing a good job of claiming back one section as can be seen above with this stone starting to disappear.

The necropolis is quite famous in Scotland, and regularly gets used in film and television - especially for crime dramas, and that type of thing. It provides quite a dramatic backdrop for a murder I guess !!!!

We were wandering around for about half an hour looking at all the stones - and its not the first time we've been - what a great and cheery place to visit you are all thinking !

Its built on a small hill which also adds to the effect, and the path zig zags up, providing rows for the stones and tombs.

I love how the copper lettering on the tall one above now stands out after having turned green due to exposure to the elements.

In terms of building a big fancy tomb - I'm not sure if its just vanity or not, but to be fair because they have, they have collectively left behind quite an impressive legacy to explore.

As weird as it sounds, we enjoyed our visit to the Necropolis, and I'm sure we will be back again at some point - its great to be living it up in the dead centre of Glasgow !

All the best from Scotland !

Ufff friend @hoosie what a spectacular place, that cemetery, what beautiful temples, the same thing happened to you when I visited the Necropolis of Colon in Cuba, they are places where relics are preserved, I loved it.

Many thanks - they are pretty cool places !!!!

Some interesting tombstones there. I bet many are very old.

Aye - quite interesting indeed. The oldest only dated to around the 1830s believe it or not, with the majority in the region of around 1830 to say 1910 or so - so mostly the Victorian era.
